And very indirectly, it is worth celebrating because it was Hitler's massive overreach. If he had kept the peace with Russia it's not clear how the war would have evolved.

Operation Barbarossa is important to me, and the USSR contributed mightily to the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Because I have information and belief as to both what "side" is his and which "side" won the war.

Obama probably is, since his grandfather was in the Red Army per him. Although he's probably conflicted between Communist and National Socialists. I think he likes the latter.

Invading Russia was his plan all along. It is inconceivable that he kept the peace. Stalin was probably the only person in Russia that trusted Hitler.

Me neither.

And for those people who were born after the war but whose circumstances have little to do with the war, the changes that would have occurred might well have prevented your own birth, because of how spectacularly unlikely it is that any single individual could ever be born.

I knew that, basically because I've read hundreds of books on WWll and the date of the German invasion of Russia always stood out for me as it's my birthday. (And fuck anyone who wishes me a happy as it took two hours to reply to everyone on Facebook)

I care. It was a major turning point of the war. It led to great allied victories such as Stalingrad. Oh, and to Ald, Erwin wasn't involved as he was still in North Africa.

In hindsight, probably yes. But my understanding is that lots of people, not just Stalin, were very surprised.

What did that have to do with anything I said? It was a major turning point in the war whether we were in it yet or not.

How could it "lead to" that?? That's like saying the invasion of France "led to" great Allied victories.

It was a major turning point in the war

The war had lots of "major turning points". But this was not one of them. The major turning points were when the Nazi advance was halted and reversed.

Most likely I saw a “today in history” on that day in 2020 but not in 2025.
