Words have different meanings in different contexts. It is a historical fact that the name "Aunt Jemima" was originally a reference to a black slave, and that "aunt" and "uncle" were commonly used to address and refer to such slaves. Uncle Ben is another example.My father used to have some early records by Burl Ives, and one included a song called "Old Uncle Ned". When I first heard it, I thought it was about someone's uncle, but when I read the text on the back of the record jacket, it explained that it was actually about a slave. That was a song by Stephen Foster that I gather was once somewhat popular, but certainly, has not been commonly heard for decades. |
