The Russians didn't want their space travelers called astronauts. I know the Chinese have a unique name for theirs. (Avoiding the obvious jokes) |

I was watching a history show and Yuri Gagarin's flight was one of the most celebrated events in modern history, although it wasn't here. He received parades in countries around the world, not just communist ones either. He had a parade in London. But he was barred from even entering the US. I never knew. |

The reality is that the only thing that prevented Russia from dominating the space race for the last 60 years was that a Nazi decided to surrender to the US instead of Russia. The likely coming reality is that our space program is poised for a big leap over the next two decades. After a 20 year pause, we're going to get to where people thought that we were headed. We will likely have dozens, maybe hundreds of people living and working in space in just the next 10 years and many hundreds or thousands in the decade after that. It's moving that fast. |

Conventionally, non-Russians who went up on the Soyuz were cosmonauts and non-Americans who went up on the Shuttle were Astronauts. So it should extend to everyone else who used the Soyuz and took off from Baikonur. |
