What better time than when everyone is preoccupied?

I asked a guy I know who works with the Chinese a lot, don't they realize that this will ruin Hong Kong as the financial center it currently is? He said, they don't care, they have Shanghai and don't need Hong Kong to fill that role any more.

For some strange reason I didn't get the usual Washington Post paywall and didn't need the archived version.

I think what we need is another Nevelle Chamberlain to go to Beijing, give up Czec Hong Kong and come back saying "Peace in our time".

??? Was I unclear?

He said, "They [the Chinese government] don't care [if Hong Kong stops being a useful financial center]; they have Shanghai [as a financial center now] and don't need Hong Kong to fill that role any more."

Does this violate the handover agreement between the UK and China? Can the UK bring suit against China at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the matter?
