I like the reusable bags. Single use bags hurt the environment. What's the problem with reusable bags?

This I agree with. The same ban was done here in Chicago, with suspension of the 7 cent bag tax which I hope is suspended permanently. But I doubt it.

1. They require greater resources to produce, they also have to be washed.
2. They’re dirty and spread germs.
3. Luggage isn’t used as often and generally is used for “clean” items.

We spray our reusable bags with Lysol after each use.
People carry dirty laundry in luggage.

I have many of them, and throw them in the washing machine after every grocery trip. I also take out the vinyl base and wash it.

I reuse. I just like it. It's not about the .20 discount.

Problem is loss prevention or police stalk me because they think bringing your own bag is for shoplifting.

The article doesn't actually say that.

It mentions this: The rule appears to be the most stringent coronavirus-related restriction placed on reusable bags in California, which has banned single-use plastic bags since 2016.

But there is no mention of that ban being rescinded. It might be that everyone has to use store-provided paper bags.

Same here. I really don't like the reusable bags, but Shop Rite around here has stubbornly refused to bring back the plastic bags despite the enforcement deadline being extended.

Hmm... thanks for the tip, it might be store-specific. I might try the other Shop-Rite in the area (which I typically avoid because it's usually crowded).

Bag "tax" was not a tax. It was a fee. The 5 cent fee per bag was kept by the merchant.

I wonder what percentage of deposit bottles and cans get recycled. Some people e do recycle. Other enterprising or impoverished people collect and cash them in but the rest have become an additional windfall for the merchants.

The problem with the single use bags is, there was no refund on the nickel per bag charge. Most ended up in the trash with the merchants again falling air to another government imposed windfall,

We are talking one or two bags, and that does not even call for my weekly colored load to be set to a larger size. (my flannel shirts are what do that).

I've mentioned this elsewhere that I think they have a purpose only at the self-checkout so far. Instead of giving myself 8 plastic bags, I pack the reusable a certain way that it's not 900 pounds, and I'm down to only 3 plastic bags I need to recycle or reuse.

I'm not an all or nothing kinda guy

They are disgusting!! You should see the filthy bags people bring I to the store. It's gross, and unsanitary. If anything good comes out of this horrible virus nightmare is perhaps New York will rethink their I'll conceived plastic bag ban. They are much more sanitary.
Furthermore, the reusable ones are actually harsher on the environment when thrown out use way more resources to make

I do that too. I determined I will still be using the same amount of plastic bags with the NY ban....I'll just have to buy them.
I never threw clean plastic shopping bags out. I used them to carry things, used them in luggage as you stated (also put shoes I was packing in them too in suitcase), used them for garbage and so forth. I still have lots from before the ban, but once I deplete my stock, I'll have to buy them in bulk on Amazon or something....as I use them all the time.....including grocery shopping, as I hate unsanitary reusable bags...and the paper test failed, they rip and are hard to carry a bunch of them
