Village Voice did a story about it.The lead robber was married and gay and cruising gay bars in Manhattan. Mafia owned the bars and often identified patrons for blackmail threatening to out men potentially ruining them. Mafia also loaned money and that is how the robber got in trouble with mafia so they planned the bank robbery to pay off debts. |

It was legit but I don't think all that money was going to pay for the operation.The lead robber was gay and in a relationship with the guy needing a gender reassignment. But it was the mafia who ran the bar they hung out in and loaned money. That's where the idea to rob a bank came up to pay off the mafia. Some people think that the Lufthansa heist was not nearly as much money as the company and media reported but by putting out a fake dollar amount it made the mafia bosses think they were being shorted by the people who carried it out. Create mistrust and they start killing each other. |
