My stock of 20 rolls of TP which I bought in February mean it did a whole lotta good. However, I didn't see that as being one of the first things to go, I just was using up my coupons and taking advantage of sales as I roamed the aisles for food.

I was caught flat-footed on hand sanitizer, did not buy any this year (fortunately I found a liter bottle buried in a drawer that expired 3 years ago), surface disinfectant, and paper towels (sponges and scouring pads are an ok substitute for cleaning). I bought a bottle of rubbing alcohol right before they completely ran out thanks to my cat scratching me that week and me realizing how much it would suck to run out.

The BJ's near me has a two-pack limit on paper towels now. The only ones they have stocked are Bounty 12-roll packs (all out of Berkeley and Jensen) and they're charging over $31 per pack.

$31/pack, damn! CVS has a 2 roll limit and charges $3/roll, which is more expensive than $31/12 pack, but I only needed one roll, so I was OK with the high price for it.

Speaking of "ethics", there is this about Loeffler:

"It's a similar story with the recently-appointed Loeffler, who told the public on Feb. 28 that Trump and his administration were "doing a great job working to keep Americans healthy & safe." But starting in January, after Loeffler received briefings about the dangers of the coronavirus from health officials, the Daily Beast reports that she and her husband made a series of 27 stock sales that beat the crash — and one stock purchase, in one of the few companies that has seen share prices rise. Who is Loeffler's husband, you may be idly wondering? His name is Jeffrey Sprecher, and he's the chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. An interesting coincidence, no?"

Granted, but the reason I'm highly suspicious is that all journalists, myself included, are detectives to a greater or lesser degree, and we know that in the real world, there is rarely such a thing as true "coincidence".

The stocks Loeffler (and the other Senators) sold were exactly the ones you'd expect to see dumped during an accelerating natural disaster like COVID-19. Loeffler cashed out shares in companies like CSX, various hoteliers, and travel services. Trustees taking a chance on going to jail over that? Sorry, no sale.

Loeffler cashed out shares in companies like CSX, various hoteliers, and travel services.

The trustees could very well have made those decisions based on publicly available information. The Chinese quarantined Wuhan on January 23. That made another SARS-like outbreak seem very likely. SARS more or less fizzled but certainly put a scare into the travel and hospitality industries.

The share sales happened Jan. 24 through Feb. 14.

why these particular stocks

Because at the time of the sale, there was already plenty of public information available that those stocks could be in trouble.

You have to demonstrate that non-public information was used to make the sales decisions, which is pretty hard, given that the Chinese government had already quarantined Wuhan.

So other trusts and people unrelated to the intelligence commission didn't sell similar stocks?

What I'm trying to convey is that you need to get some distance and get a broader understanding of what was happening. You're looking at this through a magnifying glass. Maybe a mile high view might help things make more sense. Maybe it turns out that given the public information all kinds of funds were dumping these same stocks. Or maybe it ends up being additional circumstantial evidence that she used her intelligence info to benefit financially.

The stock that Loeffler bought, Citrix, was already going up before the Senate hearing. Obviously some people in the market saw Wuhan and thought, hey this could help an electronic conferencing company. Her trustees very likely were just part of a buy wave.

I haven't yet found out what she sold.

No, it does not. "Pump and dump" involves artificially inflating the price of an owned stock through false and misleading positive statements, in order to sell the cheaply purchased stock at a higher price. That's not the case here.

I'm aware it doesn't meet the legal definition, if Bezos thought the virus was enough of a threat to sell his stock he should have told the newspaper he owns to sound the alarm instead he had them downplay so he in ordcer to keep the stock price high.
