538 uses very statistically sound techniques.

Remember that they predicted Trump with a 30% chance of winning the election the prior day when lots of others were saying less than 5%.

They do give lesser weight to certain polls that are known manipulators of the facts, but those are on both sides of the aisle (not just Rasmussen).
