He is referring to the fact that early hearings were held behind closed doors.He refuses to acknowledge that the Trump impeachment investigation is different from Nixon or Clinton, because the former two were investigated behind closed doors by special prosecutors, whereas no such special prosecutor existed for Trump's games with respect to Ukraine. |

And it ignores the fact that in a conventional criminal prosecution, the prosecutor’s office performs an investigation behind closed doors prior to bringing the matter before a grand jury. We are presently at the grand jury stage, except that those are also behind closed doors. |

But even then, the fact remains that the investigations of Nixon and Clinton had their phases behind closed doors too.When Ken Starr threatened Monica Lewinsky with jail if she didn't spill the beans on Bill, it sure wasn't done out in the open. |

Perhaps, but the more distinctions you draw between impeachment and standard criminal procedures, the less you can apply criminal standards to it. Which makes Republican claims that Trump is being denied due process and presumption of innocence meaningless. The Sixth Amendment doesn’t apply here. |
