1969 World Series

Posted by https://salaamallah.com/ on Wed Oct 16 20:10:47 2019

1969 World Series
The 1969 World Series was played between the New York Mets and the Baltimore Orioles, with the Mets prevailing in five games to accomplish one of the greatest upsets in Series history, as that particular Orioles squad was considered to be one of the finest ever. The World Series win earned the team the sobriquet "Miracle Mets", as they had risen from the depths of mediocrity. This was the first World Series of Major League Baseball's Divisional Era.

REMEMBER THIS ?

1969 NY Mets. Worst to first. With Gil driving the bus & having Tom, Jerry & Nolan on the mound smokin those Birds, suprised they didn't take them 4 straight. Then it was the NY Jets with Weeb & Broadway Joe for another big time upset. Bad year for the bookies. Any Joe Six Pack that put a few bucks down on the underdogs cashed in big time!
1969 was a good year to be a NY sports fan.

A great time! I was 10 and conveniently got a sore throat on Monday night before Game 3, so I stayed home from school. Fortunately, my grandmother was able to come over to stay with me during the day, so I got to watch all 3 games on TV (truth be known, I probably could have gone to school on Thursday, but no way was I going to miss that, so I told my mother "better give it one more day". I still remember the front of the Daily News the next days, showing the fans on the field and a headline in huge type "WORLD CHAMPS!" That started an obsession with baseball for me. 1970 I was all about baseball. This tempered over the years, now I hardly ever watch baseball.

I was 4 years old in 1969 and didn't know about baseball yet so I missed it. We moved to Queens in 1970. My first Mets memory is going to Shea Stadium as an 8 year old day camper in 1973. The Mets were playing the Astros. The first play I ever saw was Jerry Grote grounding out to shortstop.

I remember the '73 Series very well. Been bleeding orange and blue since then.

Very nice house. You were a lucky man to grow up there. My family. the six of us, had to grow up in a small apartment in Woodside. Too bad you couldn't keep it in the family. That house would probably fetch 3/4 Mil$$ on the market in that neighborhood today.

I took this picture in 1961 with my Kodak Brownie camera from the roof of my growing up apt house 37-26-65th St in Woodside. Thats the Flushing Line in the distance above Roosevelt Ave, running R15s twoards Times Sq.
Its obvious that clothes dryers were still in the future for many as much laundry is on the line drying in the dirty breeze.

That was (well still is) a nice house!

This is where I lived most of the time I lived in Brooklyn

(The one on the right). That gate in the driveway my mom had installed in 1975, the year before we moved.

And this was my grandparents last house. My parents and I lived with them for a year and a half before they bought the above house

And just down the street...

Yep, the Newlots Av IRT station. Great place to live for a budding railfan. You could see the station from some of the rooms on the second floor of the house. Great place for a budding railfan :)

The brick building is the Livonia substation. That "No ball playing" sign has been there since the 70s lol. I wonder if the kids today ignore it like we did :)

2 reasons:

1. I was going to attend USC in the fall of 1976
2. I suffered from asthma at the time, and the doctor recommended that I relocate to a climate that didn’t have the same irritants as in NY. Fortunately, the asthma subsequently became dormant, which is why I was able to move to Florida in 1998

I was only 17 in 1976, so my mother moved out with me for a year, then returned to NY the following year when I was 18

I recently finished reading The Year the Mets Lost Last Place by Paul Zimmerman and Dick Schaap, a detailed account of nine games in July against the Cubs and Expos while the Mets were battling the Cubs for the division. It came out two days after Game 5 and doesn't mention the World Series at all.

I still need to watch games 4 and 5.
