Astronaut accused of what would be the first crime in space

Posted by The Silence on Sun Aug 25 02:42:21 2019

NASA Astronaut Anne McClain accused of identity theft and fraud

McClain was in space between December of last year and June of this year, and is accused by her estranged wife (the two are in the process of getting a divorce) of accessing a private bank account in the wife's name only, without permission, while aboard the Space Station.

From the article:

"The divorce continues, but according to McClain's statement to NASA's internal investigation, the couple's finances are not yet separated, leading to the bank account confusion."

If that's accurate, it would suggest a joint account, and therefore no crime. My mother used to be a bank branch manager, and I remember her telling me stories about the way divorcing couples used to race each other to the bank to empty out their joint accounts. First one to the teller got it all.

Of course, today, you can do that online...

That's true and all, but there is an issue of moving money and assets the day before to game the courts. I can't remember if it matters if the money is co-mingled and all, but the intent behind this is not good from a legal perspective.
Although I'm not fully versed in family law, that's one of the issues that seem to always occur.

If she committed the crime in outer space, I think the crime would be adjudicated on Mongo.

Too bad we pulled out of the Hague. The EU courts are really "scary". (sarcasm off).
