I can't imagine. My worst was 2 hours on the tarmac for what was supposed to be a 3 hour flight. They told us that it was for thunderstorms, but what they didn't tell us was that a tornado had been spotted less than 2 miles from the airport.

That sucks. Hope my flight today isn't also delayed.

I forget the year, but I was stuck inside Raleigh-Durham airport for over 7 hours. Our flight crew timed out and they flew in a new crew.I arrived in Philadelphia , later that evening.

That happened to me in May at LGA. We landed in a thunderstorm and since they were not allowing any takeoffs, we sat on a conga line for almost an hour, waiting for a gate to open up.

It's always something with the airlines. Of course some is beyond their control, but I've been in too many of these to list. Most recent of the crazies was my flight SW flight from ATL-DCA was seriously delayed by a groundstop as a huge weather system was affecting the midwest and northeast. Eventually time made our flight crew ineligible to fly. The found another cockpit crew, but we still needed flight attendants. Then we got flight attendants, but needed one more who was coming down on a flight from MDW. Thankfully, It worked out and we made it to DCA about 4 hours late. Normally it would've have been a huge worry to me, but this time it was critical as that was the last flight of the evening, and the next morning I was to leave for NYC with some friends for the weekend.

I once got booted from a flight in Honolulu 2 hours before boarding. Spending 8 hours at the airport was bad enough but even worse I later realized that they had lied when they told me that the flight was canceled and that for whatever reason they decided that they didn't want me to fly. Some sort of profiling is all that I can imagine.

spring 1976, on a flight to Chicago there was a delay of over two hours for my flight out of Logan.

August 1985, also at Logan, charter flight to Paris, was supposed to leave mid-evening so we'd get there by early or mid morning. With the delay of several hours, we didn't leave until sometime after 2 am (later probably*), and I got into Paris about early to mid afternoon, almost 12 hours later - hey this sounds just like the wait time when you need to go to the ER...

-Thanks Frank!

Were you in the military at the time? Or on stand by of some sort?

I think that it was although I can’t say for sure. It was one of the majors for sure.

Nah. Just there on business with a regular flight with a reserved coach seat.

It was the strangest thing that I’ve experienced while flying. I checked in my bag in the terminal, went through security, and was walking to the gate when I heard my name paged to a courtesy phone. They told me that my flight was canceled, had me go back to the terminal, gave me my bags and sent me to another major for an evening flight that arrives the next day instead of at night.

I only realized later when there weren’t a plane full of people scrambling for seats or coming back to get their bags that only “my flight” was canceled. Not the entire flight.

My one time in Hawaii was on United. DC-10 both ways. This was in the summer of 1990, when they were still a decent airline :(

Now, if UA was the only option, I will walk. Even to Hawaii :D
