I should know because I have turned on lights before. Even an oven. #housegoy 15 years ago a lady asked if I'm Jewish because she saw me taking stairs all the way to 6th floor. Well, like some guy reminded me about 2 years ago, in the North the bathrooms have windows. Our corporate sunbelt apartments put the bathrooms so deep inside that no light makes it that far.Since I put LED's in, I get tempted just to leave the light on during the day as I work my way into the bowels of my dwelling. But force of habit always gets the best of me. Don't forget to disable the refrigerator light bulb too. |

In hindsight, I let foolish pride influence my better judgement so I went after him - I really had no business getting involved in that one and I got beat. Then again, that outcome should come as no surprise to anyone since I am on the losing end of pretty much every thread I enter except those that discuss the Bruckner Interchange in the Bronx and the 238th Street - Neried Avenue Station and the flyover re. the 239th Street yard leads. Those I can win routinely and I do. |

That was a great exchange.Yes, it was, but the fact remains I still lost. Even to the casual observer, I have been losing Gay Day threads at an alarming almost inconceivable rate anyone can see that. I learned a valuable lesson this afternoon and that is this: You go after JayZeeBMT or the Pragmatist in a Gay Day thread in mid-August and do not expect anything good to come of it. Wait until you see a thread I am working on. You just raised expectations to a level that nobody can hope to achieve - I suggest next time you ratchet it down a little. I just noticed the RIPTA42hopetunnel just began a New Flyer thread on the other board. Those are right in my wheelhouse so I think I am going over there and attack. |

No. Orthodox Jews probably have to shut off Alexa to prevent accidentally triggering it on the Sabbath. Also, as it's "always on," even if it doesn't get triggered it's constantly processing sound that you generate not just by talking but by just walking around. |

The latter ensures that the elevator does not require human intervention for use during Sabbath or Jewish holidays, i.e., complies with the requirements of not doing any of the 39 categories of work prohibited by Jewish law during the Sabbath. The elevator does not require a blessing. |

But if someone installs an elevator with a switch that allows it to be operated so that it stops at every floor without anyone taking any positive action, and then turns that switch on before every Sabbath, and never discusses this whole process with any rabbi, it's still OK to use that elevator on the Sabbath, is it not? |

|
Posted by Dave on Mon Aug 12 17:11:38 2019, in response to Re: Sabbath observations, posted by AlM on Mon Aug 12 17:00:13 2019. Are we talking about a Sabbath-compliant elevator that was inspected and approved by a rabbi before first being used? Or someone who installs such a switch without rabbinical inspection? The latter case probably would not be okay but having said that, it might depend upon the circumstances. For example, if a Chassidic rabbinical leader had such an elevator installed in his home, he probably wouldn't need outsude rabbinical inspection because he's familiar with the intricases of Jewish Law regarding working on the Sabbath. He could inspect the work and operation himself...maybe. |
