Democratic Food Fight

Posted by TRAIN DUDE on Thu Jul 11 19:14:00 2019

AOC suggests that Nancy pelosi is disrespectful to women of color. Are we to believe that Nancy pelosi is racist?

Pulling up a chair and opening a beer. The show is about to start.

AOC needs to sit down and shut up. She won a District where the Democratic Primary is the actual election. The Democrats had a chance at a sustainable majority in the House. AOC and her ilk are ruining that.

Actually, it is probably good for Democrats if AOC is seen as being more radical than Pelosi and having almost no support.

She can play the role that Henry Wallace played for Truman in 1948 - make the Democratic candidate look safe because the fringe isn't included.

Only if you think that moderate democrats are still the soul of the party. Correct me if I'm wrong because I don't keep up like you but aren't nearly all of the Democratic candidates campaigning on an AOC style platform? The leading candidate - Biden - is the big exception.

Sanders is close to AOC, but his chances are diminishing.

I agree that Warren is quite radical, though nowhere near AOC levels. Her chances in the general could be hurt by AOC mouthing off.

Harris and Buttigieg are generally trying to avoid any really radical positions, though Harris has made a few flubs that makes it unclear what her position is on some issues. I'm sure she can make herself clear if she becomes the front runner.

It seems that all of the candidates of note, with the exception of Biden, are campaigning closer to AOC, than to the way that Obama governed (as opposed to the way that he campaigned). But I mostly only read the headlines and a couple paragraphs so I could be off.

I don't think that Biden can win as the race drags on. I think that he's seen as out of touch by many. Out of the rest, only warren and sanders have a shot. I think that it's Warren and I do think that she can beat trump based on the little I know about her.

She has a chance, but I'd put her in the second tier. I think that she's going to be hurt by being a former prosecutor who enforced all the laws that most Democrats don't like now. That's just what I've read. My personal opinion from watching her is that she lacks a vision of purpose for being in the race. She doesn't seem to stand for anything. She's the blah candidate.

The top candidate with the worst odds imo is Buttigieg. South Bend isn't doing well according to most poor residents and they are more than willing to share their low opinions of him.

I wonder if many candidates don't have a narcissism related personality disorder. I pretty much think that no regular person would subject themselves to what our elections have become.

LA's mayor was smart enough to see the writing on the wall. NYC's mayor sees something in himself that many NYers must not.

Yes and it was DiBlasio that I was specifically referring to. While most South Bend blacks apparently dislike Buttigieg, there is a more broad dislike for New York's executive. Frankly, the only explanation to his reelection is that New Yorkers are voting for a party and not a candidate.

That said, your assessment about narcissistism appears to be dead on.

I don't think Warren can beat Trump. I think Harris has a better shot, but it is far from definite. With how large the field is for the Democrats I can understand not wanting to completely position yourself on issues or come out with policy ideas because it then becomes fodder for your opponents in the primary. If they shoot the policy ideas down and you end up winning the primary then they have done all of the heavy lifting for Trump in the general.

You also had a weak Republican in a year that the Democrats were pushing hard to take back the New York Senate. Even though NYC was a foregone conclusion for the Senate, you had a lot of voters who wanted to show strong Democratic majorities for safe seats.

I agree that she's intentionally running a safe campaign, but I disagree that it's beneficial at this stage. This is when you need to motivate and develop a national base and you don't do that by being a face in the crowd. She's struggled to define her position with what should be easy questions in debates.

That said, it's still early and I could be way off. At this stage in the election I would have sad that neither Obama nor Bill Clinton had a chance.

IMO, AOC is acting as a bellweather for the Democrats' base. Despite her lack of congressional support, she has support from Democrats who want real change, since she and her cohorts are offering that. Pelosi and Schumer are politically powerful, but they aren't offering a whole lot.

She has a chance, but I'd put her in the second tier.

I put her higher than her polls are right now because large numbers of Democrats consider Sanders and Warren too radical to win in November (and they'll split the left wing vote) and many Democrats think Biden is just too dated.

I think Biden's erosion, assuming it happens, will go to her and Buttigieg, not to Sanders and Warren.

Obama promised immigration reform when he was running for office in 2008 and even though democrats controlled the entire legislative branch of the federal government, I don't recall anything being done. I guess that there were other priorities, but they really missed the boat and maybe we are where we are because of that inaction.

Except that, because the Republican Congress didn't change the law, people claiming refugee status have wide-ranging rights that Trump can't negate by executive order. He forgot to have a Republican Congress make those rights narrower while he had a chance. And now he's not willing to negotiate a package deal with Democrats but just heaps verbal abuse on them instead.
