It always appeared to me to have a racial and gender component. In my experience nearly all of the "disco sucks" crowd was white and also overwhelmingly male. I never understood the animosity. If I don't like a style of music, I don't listen. It doesn't upset me that other people like it. I think that the disco sucks movement was a backlash against something bigger than just the music. |

Many whites were into disco, (think Bee Gees, "Saturday Night Live" movie).Disco was formula music with basically a similar sound, beat etc. easily getting fatigued on the ears. If it was a Black/White thing, there would have been a "Motown Sucks" night. That never happened, thankfully! |

Gay thing?A lot of the men who were into disco were gay. It certainly skewed gayer than other genres of music. OTOH, jazz and rap are/were both "blacker" than disco, and their opposition was of the typical parents hating their children's music sort of thing. |
