Agreed! Also with WMATA buses it's easy to know if they're about to move because when the doors are open they trigger the hazard flashers. Of course that doesn't protect against a pedestrian suddenly appearing from in front of the bus.

True enough, Some far sides might be too dangerous to have. Such as parking lots, gas stations.

If the bus stop is at the far side of the intersection but your destination is at the near side, first you have to wait for the bus to get through the light, and then you have to go back across the street that the bus just crossed. Such passengers would greatly prefer the bus stop to be on the near side.

There was just a nasty accident not too long ago, where some fool turned left, directly into the path of a Girard Ave. trolley.

The car got batted all the way across the intersection, with its frame nicely bent. The old PCC was back in service out of Callowhill just three days later.

People never learn.

If I intend to cross the street the bus is operating on, being on the near side puts me closer to the crosswalk than the far side (far side stops are usually quite a few feet in compared to near side stops right at the light). Even if I ultimately needed to go to the diagonally opposite corner, It's still faster to cross twice from the near side than once from the far side.

If you get off the back door of a 3-door bus, the reverse is true.

We actually have 3 door buses, almost 10 of them! (arrgh). Still though, the front door is right at the crosswalk, while the back door is maybe 25 feet behind. The rear door of a 40' bus has the other 15', combined with 25 more feet because the front of the stop is 65' from the curb to accommodate longer buses. The possibility of 0' / 25' on one side versus 40' / 65' on the other side means lots more walkin.

Ok that was clear as mud because I can't words for some reason:

OK, that makes sense. I'll believe you that the back door is still 25' in front of the back of the bus.

Though my experience in NYC is that if a bus stop is really long the bus stops just far enough in to clear the crosswalk with its rear. Even sometimes when there is a second bus right behind!

that's an interesting observation.

I wonder what the rulebook says about stopping in a long stop?

I'm guessing it's easier for the bus to leave the bus stop as you describe closer to the crosswalk with plenty of room in front.

What makes you think they all even have an active license to begin with?

If you knew how many people around you didn't have one of those, well, you'd probably want a wall then.
