That first photo in the snow.....brought back memories of coming downstairs one blizzardy winter morning (1956 maybe?) in my family's garden apartment, Manor Road & Hillside Avenue, Queens (Bell Park Manor Terrace) and seeing in the my Aunt sleeping on the couch and my uncle sleeping on a cot set up in the middle of the living room. Turns out they were driving on the Cross Island Pkwy. late the previous night, back to his parents' (my aunt's in-laws) apartment on Grand Concourse in the Bronx, and they became seriously stuck, along with a lot of other cars on the Parkway. My uncle trudged who knows how far to a pay phone, called my parents, and my Dad drove out and picked them up - car could not be dug out that night. He then drove to 179th St. & Hillside where my uncle's parents could take the "D" home right to their front door. How sweet that must have been, for both his parents to settle into one of the cozy corner transverse seats of a nice warm R1-9 "F" for a lengthy, calm ride home, only having to change once to a D at 47th-50th street for part two of their journey (subways are for sleeping...). The other picture I notice was of the Sands in Las Vegas, brought back memories of maybe the favorite double album of my older cousin, "Sinatra at the Sands." He loved listening to it, and always put it on at some point when were visiting my Dad's family upstate in Middletown. |
