Kate Smith released by the Yankees
Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Fri Apr 19 13:37:14 2019 Say goodby to Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" in Yankee Stadium during the 7th Inning Stretch. It was discovered that she recorded a racially offensive (by today's standards) song back in the 1930s. Yankee brass found about that & made the announcement this morning. AFAIK The Flyers down in Phila. did the same thing. This is just crazy. Political correctness run amok. That song she did (name escapes me at the moment) was recorded by other Black artists of the day w/o any problems or backlash. So now Kate Smith is a racist & her body of work with song, movies & TV. is now to be tainted, due to one song. Sad, really sad. Wait until they find out that an 18yr old Sinatra recorded a racially insensitive( by today 's standards) tune called "Shine" Soon, I guess we can kiss goodby to his "New York, New York" at the end of every Yankee home game. Who would ever think it would come to this?

That said, I'd be more inclined to agree with the teams' decisions if these songs were recorded in modern times, instead of during the Great Depression.

Gutless cowards @NHLFlyers @comcast @NBCSPhilly Good luck raising charity dollars in the future,” Bruno wrote. Last week, reported that the Flyers were distancing themselves from Smith, the “Songbird of the South,” whose music was seen as a good-luck charm by fans. “We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization,” the Flyers said in a statement. “As we continue to look into this serious matter, we are removing Kate Smith’s recording of ‘God Bless America’ from our library and covering up the statue that stands outside of our arena.” It was unclear Sunday morning when exactly the statue was removed. This is a developing story. This will go over like the lead balloon that Kaepernick launched over the NFL.
