All that 200+ year old wood's going to burn very very fast.This has happened before. The frame is stone, they can rebuild it. Big problem is $$$, or more exactly, €€€. So sad. They had already removed much of the ornamentation on the spire (now collapsed) for restoration. Still, this is tragic. Huge loss for the world. |

So far, there are reports that they got a lot of stuff out before the roof went (apparently that is where the fire started) and the facade towers are free of fire now. They expect to have it under control in several hours. There is a report of a severely injured firefighter, but no loss of life thus far.Plans for reconstruction are beginning. They believe the stone structure will survive, if they can keep it together they may be able to rebuild within the original shell. |

They had removed the sculptures from the spire before this happened. They supposedly got a lot of the stuff inside....paintings and sculptures, anything they could carry. There's damage to the stained glass, much has been lost there, but it's so well documented surely they can be reconstructed.Big questions structurally is whether or not the collapsing spire (19th century, wood) did damage or not, and did the cast iron used in previous restorations warp or melt, with the potential of causing additional structural problems. We can only pray that damage is minimal. |

As it stands, it's seen several reconstructions over its long long history, some of which (cast iron reinforcements from the 19th century) could cause problems for structural integrity. Reports now are a bit more optimistic now than several hours back. |
