Perhaps also our president has contributed to the crisis by his own actions.Instead of threatening to shut the border and call for a wall (neither of which are solutions to the crisis), perhaps he should be talking with Pelosi and McConnell about what can be done to fix the situation. Oh but no, he alone can fix the immigration problem. |

There is no national emergency: No foreign army is invading or bombing us No natural disasters (other than Winter Storm Wesley... please) are inundating us No nuclear missiles are flying towards our cities... OTOH, dragging children away from their parents and Caging them, IS a humanitarian crisis. Threatening to close our southern border is a crisis. Denying asylum to desperate people fleeing mortal danger, is a crisis. What "breaking point" is Fox referring to? |

Negotiations with Congress ("look, we've got to make it somewhat harder to apply for asylum; it was fine when it was 50K in a year, but it just doesn't work when it's a million per year; can we trade that for DACA) don't appeal to his base. Threatening to close the border and to build a wall with unappropriated funds - those appeal to his base. |

We absorbed 125,000 Cuban refugees during the spring and summer of 1980 in the space of just five months without throwing babies in cages, hiding refugees under bridges, or closing the borders. (we did hold "hard to sponsor" immigrants (i.e. those with actual criminal records) on military bases, and the most severe cases were sent to federal prison to await deportation. The majority of those who came over in the boatlift, however, found new lives waiting for them here. Almost 90,000 of them arrived in May alone. That was on top of the normal immigration rate at our other borders and POEs.Can't imagine how we accomplished that without any modern technology, and with a Democrat in the White House. We didn't expect Castro to let anyone wishing to leave Cuba via Mariel back then, but we dealt with it. Haitian refugees joined them, along with thousands of Canadians (!), and Carter had an open door policy towards them all, with the exception of the aforementioned known, hardened criminals. Somehow, these immigrants were unable to destroy America, even though Trump says today's refugees would do just that... |

A lot of asylum seekers are trying to do an end-run around our shitty immigration laws. Fix those and there will be less asylum seekers. But, the Obama admin chose to do DACA rather than attempt to actually address the problem. DACA's not even a band-aid, it's applying skin lotion to address a broken bone. |

You're missing the fact that US law allows you to walk up to the front door and ask hi, can I come in? Fortifying the side walls of the house does nothing to help that.
