The more I read about this, the more convinced I am that Amazon was just a bunch of snowflakes.

IAWTP. The seemingly savviest take I heard was from here, a portion of a podcast episode. If you'd rather read than listen to a few minutes of audio, he quotes heavily from a Bloomberg article. I think you can zoom out from the details of union negotiations and Gianaris's nomination and chalk this up to Amazon being plain irresolute and ill-prepared.

yeah, but the Amazon search for HQ started way back in 2017 and was announced in late 2018.

Her election victory should not have been "anticipated" backlash like your link suggests.

Amazon provides an easy target, a white male CEO. If a minority female was the figurehead, this may not have happened.

  • New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is trying to win back Amazon by making calls to executives, including Jeff Bezos, according to The New York Times.
  • Cuomo is upset with local politicians who had opposed the deal with Amazon.
  • Amazon abandoned its plans to build half of its new headquarters in New York City earlier this month.
  • Several local New York leaders will publish an open letter in the Times, asking Amazon to come back.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pleading with Amazon executives, including CEO Jeff Bezos, to reconsider their decision to abandon plans to build a new office there, The New York Times reported Thursday.

Cuomo was outraged at local politicians who had opposed Amazon's HQ2 build on Long Island City and eventually drove the company out. Following Amazon's Valentine's Day announcement that it was abandoning its planned move to New York that would bring 25,000 jobs, Cuomo issued a statement saying, "a small group [of] politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community — which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City — the state's economic future and the best interests of the people of this state."

In the past two weeks, Cuomo has reportedly been trying to do damage control by promising Amazon executives he would help them cut through New York's bureaucracy, according to the Times, though Amazon has not indicated it's working.

Amazon executives reportedly learned of an open letter meant to be published in the Times on Friday and signed by a number of New York-based unions, businesses and community groups expressing support for Amazon.

"Governor Cuomo will take personal responsibility for the project's state approval," the signatories wrote, according to a version of the letter published by the Times in advance on Thursday.

Amazon and Cuomo's office did not immediately respond to CNBC's requests for comment.

That is part of it, but Crowley ran a very lousy campagin for re-election. As is his constituennt support has been next to nil as he was more intersted in climbing party leadership and then to send a deputy to the debate. Anyone who was on the fence before surely got turned off by that last action.

I wonder how many of those who voted for her;
Might have been in line for one of those higher paying jobs?
Have small businesses in that district that would have prospered by Amazon coming to the community.
How many secondary market jobs would have followed.
How property values would have grown for the home owners in the surrounding area.

If they wanted to have 25,000 Seattlites working for them, they’d keep them in Seattle.

Assuming, arguendo, that they’d import Seattlites for the main high-paying jobs, they obviously would hire locals for the lesser-paid positions. Not many people will agree to relocate to keep a $50,000/year job. Or less.
