Ah so you understood my point about Ocasio-Cortez and still ask what was my point. Then you much it up and ask the Truman question which makes you sound like a silly twit.

Yes, Truman went from habadasher to local politics after WWI. He served 2 terms on the Senate before becoming vice president and then president. I'm sure that every president in modern history had a job before going into politics. So what is your point?

The point is that being a barmaid is no more an issue as being a haberdasher. Truman was likely derided by republicans for being a haberdasher during his first campaign.

Obama didn't, apart from academia and politicking. Unless one counts the Baskin-Robbins in Honolulu when he was 16, of which he said:
Rows and rows of rock-hard ice cream can be brutal on the wrists. As a teenager working behind the counter at Baskin-Robbins in Honolulu, I was less interested in what the job meant for my future and more concerned about what it meant for my jump shot.
So whatever his practice for his jump shot was, it didn't prepare him for scooping ice cream. Phew.

Ocasio-Cortez bans media from Corona "listening tour"; claims media "mobbed" her at Bronx town hall

Posted by Olog-hai on Fri Aug 17 18:32:00 2018, in response to Crowley Loses, posted by northshore on Tue Jun 26 23:22:51 2018.

Queens Chronicle

Ocasio-Cortez bans press from town hall

Media was barred after reporters ‘mobbed’ her at an earlier event

Posted: Thursday, August 16, 2018 10:30 am
by Christopher Barca, Editor
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Monday that stops on her "listening tour" throughout the district, like the one held a day earlier in Corona, are "intended for lively, compassionate discourse with a diversity of viewpoints."

According to the Democratic nominee in the 14th Congressional District, she and the dozens of area residents who attended the event "talked about race, immigration, healthcare, disability rights and housing."

But unless you were in the room on Sunday, you won't know what specific community problems were mentioned or how Ocasio-Cortez planned to address them once she is sworn in.

That's because her campaign banned members of the media from attending the event, which was otherwise open to the public.

In the seven weeks since she pulled off one of the most remarkable upsets in recent American political history -- defeating longtime Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, Bronx) by 15 points in June's Democratic primary -- Ocasio-Cortez has become a political star.

Soon after her victory came numerous profiles in high-profile publications like The New York Times and Rolling Stone, guest hosting shows on the online progressive news network The Young Turks and appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

She has also traveled the country from Kansas to Hawaii in recent weeks to campaign -- sometimes with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) -- for fellow progressive candidates running in their own primaries.

But when Ocasio-Cortez returned to the district for a Bronx community meeting with prominent healthcare activist Ady Barkan last Tuesday, her campaign manager, Vigie Ramos Rios, later told the Chronicle, she was "mobbed" by reporters, "even though we said no Q&A and no one-on-one [interviews]."

According to Ramos Rios and campaign spokesman Corbin Trent, that unwanted attention led to a press ban both for last Wednesday's listening tour stop in the Bronx and Sunday's in Corona.

"We wanted to help create a space where community members felt comfortable and open to express themselves without the distraction of cameras and press. These were the first set of events where the press has been excluded," Trent said. "This is an outlier and will not be the norm. We're still adjusting our logistics to fit Alexandria's national profile."

The 28-year-old progressive activist will almost certainly win November's general election against her nominal Republican opponent in the overwhelmingly Democratic district, which would make her the youngest-ever female member of Congress.

Asked if it was hypocritical for Ocasio-Cortez to ban the press from an in-district community meeting after weeks of interviews with prominent publications and rallying with candidates in other states, Trent said the campaign is committed to maintaining a positive relationship with area media outlets.

"After our primary victory, the campaign had what we saw as a unique and limited opportunity for Alexandria to use her elevated platform to speak about issues affecting our district to the national media, and to campaign for other progressive candidates around the country," he said. "By working to get other progressive candidates elected, Alexandria will be securing more national voting power for the people of Queens and the Bronx."

The format of Sunday's event -- which was delayed one day while Ocasio-Cortez returned from campaigning in Hawaii for congressional candidate Kaniela Ing -- saw area residents broaching issues before the Bronx progressive, who was seated in the front row.

At some point during the meeting, according to the social media feeds of attendees, Ocasio-Cortez got up and addressed the audience.

"We've been polite with racist people for far too long," she said according to the Twitter feed of Nick Gulotta, an aide to Mayor de Blasio who was in attendance. "There's a cultural idea that talking about race is divisive ... but I don't think it's divisive unless you're a racist."

Ocasio-Cortez also discussed the issue on Twitter on Monday.

"At yesterday's town hall, someone asked how I, as just a human, am dealing with the hate, subconscious bias and criticism," she wrote. "I've been told my whole life I'm not up to snuff. Folks always doubt my worthiness until I get it done."

Other social media users in attendance said that topics such as affordable housing, charter schools and Borough President Melinda Katz's interest in the building of a soccer stadium were discussed.

"The way we organize around electoral campaigns is the way we need to organize around issue campaigns when Congress is in session," Ocasio-Cortez said.
Oh, so her whole campaign is now about an inferiority complex.

Ocasio-Cortez claims solidarity with cab drivers, rips Uber after campaign spends $4,000 on Uber

Posted by Olog-hai on Wed Aug 29 12:21:16 2018, in response to Crowley Loses, posted by northshore on Tue Jun 26 23:22:51 2018.

Well, Uber is "unregulated" after all. Doesn't stop her and Bernie from using it though.

IBD

Socialist 'It' Candidate Ocasio-Cortez Rips 'Unregulated' Uber, Then Spends $4,000 On … Uber

8/28/2018
Self-described social democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the gift that keeps on giving. The youthful socialist can hardly go a day without saying something that undescores the hypocrisy of her beliefs.

Last week, we noted the irony of the socialist movement's most visible star (besides Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, of course) lamenting the closure of the restaurant she once worked at. Turns out, the restaurant closed largely due to enormous hikes in the minimum wage — a policy Ocasio-Cortez would enthusiastically impose on the whole country.

For her latest display of socialist hypocrisy, you have to go back to March.

Then, tragically, a New York cab driver named Nicanor Ochisor took his own life. He did so apparently in response to financial struggles. As Zuri Davis of the Reason.com blog points out, New York Times reporter Noam Scheiber immediately blamed ride-sharing companies Uber and Lyft for the death and faulted local government for letting the ride-sharing companies operate.

Seeing a chance to score political points, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "NYC's fourth driver suicide. Yellow cab drivers are in financial ruin due to the unregulated expansion of Uber. What was a living wage now pays under minimum."

And she had a whole socialist agenda for fixing the problem, as she saw it.
We need:
  • to call Uber drivers what they are: ᴇᴍᴘʟᴏʏᴇᴇs, not contractors
  • Fed jobs guarantee
  • Prep for automation
But, surprise! Fox News reports that Federal Election Commission records show that Ocasio-Cortez's campaign used Uber repeatedly, despite her sharp criticisms of the business model.

Indeed, her campaign spent around $4,000 on 160 Uber rides in California alone from April to late June. For the record, Ocasio-Cortez isn't running for office in California, but in New York. Apparently, California is where the really BIG socialist billionaires live.

By the way, her campaign also spent $2,500 on more than 90 rides on Juno, another ride-sharing option.

We wish she was the only hypocrite, but she's not.

All the way back in 2015, socialist Bernie Sanders also ripped Uber as an "unregulated" company with "serious problems." How firm was his stance? As Watchdog.org noted three years ago, Sanders "always takes Uber instead of a taxi."

Indeed, citing a National Journal analysis, Watchdog.org noted, "While most candidates use Uber more than taxis to get around, Sanders was one of only a few candidates to report using Uber 100% of the time when he or his campaign staff need a ride."

Apparently, socialist hypocrisy is a contagious disease.

But no one should be surprised. Sanders, in a CNN column in 2017, said the very rich are "never satisfied with what they have. They want more, more and more — no matter what impact their efforts have on working people, the elderly, children, the sick and the poor. Greed is their religion."

What he didn't say is that he's a member in good standing of the top 1%, having earned more than a million bucks in each of the last two years. Socialist millionaire Sanders, who has never held a regular private-sector job for any length of time, also owns three homes, one of them a $600,000, four-bedroom vacation home on Lake Champlain.

Ocasio-Cortez Isn't Alone

Politics, it turns out, is a great gig for socialists.

After all, why should socialists have to live up to their own beliefs? Lots of highly restrictive laws, rules and regulations, all part of the socialist political plan, aren't really meant for the elite leaders, the socialist "vanguard." They're just too important.

No, the rules are for you, the little people. It's funny until you see this isn't an anomaly, but how socialism really works.

Just look at Venezuela, Cuba, Zimbabwe, China or the old Soviet Union. In all those places, "comrade" socialist leaders help themselves and become millionaires or even billionaires, while ordinary working people suffer. George Orwell described this phenomenon best in "Animal Farm," his scathing allegory of socialist societies: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."

With socialism, hypocrisy comes with the program.

NY Poast

Crowley plans his comeback after Ocasio-Cortez defeat

By Carl Campanile
October 12, 2018 | 4:37pm
Veteran Rep. Joseph Crowley, defeated by newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a primary election that shocked the political world, is laying the groundwork for a comeback.

Crowley has formed a state campaign committee “Joe for NY,” and is holding a fundraiser Oct. 29 at the Fitzpatrick Grand Central Hotel in Manhattan, where the maximum suggested donation is $10,000.

According to an email sent to “Irish Americans & Friends Crowley” by Walter Swett of the firm Dynamic SRG, who is the Crowley committee’s campaign treasurer, the group was “established to position Joe for future opportunities in public service.”

Crowley was re-elected as the Queens Democratic Party chairman despite his 15-point blowout in June at the hands of socialist democrat Ocasio-Cortez, 28, in a diverse district that covers parts of Queens and The Bronx.

He served in the state Assembly before his election to Congress in 1998 and has been the Queens Democratic leader since 2006.

Sources said there’s a practical reason Crowley formed a state campaign committee instead of a federal one. Under federal rules, the maximum individual donation to a congressional candidate is $5,400. Under state rules, the maximum is $65,100 in a statewide race.

The IrishCentral website recently floated Crowley’s name for statewide office, noting that, “While white ethnic Catholic no longer plays that well in Queens, it is a powerful identity statewide…He will be back.”

But another political source speculated that Crowley created the new campaign committee to maintain his profile and raise money for other Democratic candidates.

Crowley’s family has actually lived for years in Virginia, though he maintains a family residence in Woodside, Queens.

Ocasio-Cortez tells NY Times she needs congressional salary before she can afford an apartment in DC

Ocasio-Cortez needs to wait for lawmaker salary to kick in to afford DC apartment

By Chris Mills Rodrigo
11/08/18 01:28 PM EST
Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told The New York Times in an interview Thursday that she will need to wait for her congressional salary to kick in before she can rent an apartment in D.C.

She explained that the transition period will be “very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.”

Ocasio-Cortez also told the Times that she had saved money before leaving her job at a restaurant and had planned accordingly with her partner.

“We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January,” she said.

Ocasio-Cortez explained on Twitter after the interview’s release that while everything with her housing is being figured out, her struggle with housing costs is one of “many little ways in which our electoral system isn’t even designed (nor prepared) for working-class people to lead.”

Ocasio-Cortez, who on Tuesday became the youngest women in history elected to Congress, worked as a bartender before toppling veteran lawmaker Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) in the Democratic primary election in June.
