The parade also ends near the Stonewall. Other parades have no ceremonial terminus, except for Broadway ticker tape parades and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the latter of which is also southbound but neither of which is on Fifth Avenue.

Believe it or not, the 2018 Pride March went northbound this year and dispersed around 28th Street. The Festival was on University Ave. south of Union Square. This reroute was the first change to the march since 1991.

I believe next June's World Pride celebration, the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, will return to its usual southbound route, ending at Stonewall National Park. It is expected to be the biggest Pride ever held, anywhere.

THIS was "socially acceptable"?

While I was in the boat, I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me. When I had taken her to my cabin she was naked—as was their custom. I was filled with a desire to take my pleasure with her and attempted to satisfy my desire. She was unwilling, and so treated me with her nails that I wished I had never begun. But—to cut a long story short—I then took a piece of rope and whipped her soundly, and she let forth such incredible screams that you would not have believed your ears. Eventually we came to such terms, I assure you, that you would have thought that she had been brought up in a school for whores.

--Michele Da Cuneo, one of Columbus' officers, and a boyhood friend.

I'm sure people in the Middle Ages understood right from wrong regarding rape.

Every explorer brought diseases with them. Better for North America that Columbus lead to European colonization. In 1492 Europe had cities, universities, cathedrals, etc. The Native Americans had teepees and corn but no written language.

Publicized the existence of the New World, resulting in an enormous upheaval in Europe, and making the New World a totally different place than it had previously been. The changes reverberate to the present.

You may hold the opinion that all of this was bad, but it is very hard to claim it wasn't momentous.

The early indigenous peoples of the Americas most certainly did have written languages. Their cultures may not have been as ornate as those of Europe, but they were no less valid for being different.

My father was a cop in the 6 pct at the time of the riot. Back fhen, the gay bars were owned by the Mob and they operated more or less as illegal social clubs without the proper paperwork. So the police used to shut down the bars with regularity. And on that night, "the queen bees were stinging mad" To quote the Daily News. So the gays rioted, and the NYPD Tactical Patrol Force arrived and dispersed wood shampoos, thus ending the riot.
