Slightly different scenario with Ghostbusters 2016. Long story short, you have a film business executive, Amy Pascal, pushing a feminist agenda onto a franchise that didn’t need it to begin with, all the while, forcing out one director (Ivan Reitman), in favor of another (Paul Feig), who has no respect for the source material whatsoever, and came up with his own written draft for the film. Once the first trailer went public, there was immediate backlashing from fans of the franchise to the point where the trailer became the most disliked on YouTube. Sony Pictures decided to weave a narrative on the negativity, having one of the actresses going on TV, dismissing the backlash as "basement dwelling man-children", insulting the core audience for the film. Stereotyping your audience is not going to put butts in the theater. Not surprisingly, Sony put out a review embargo the day before the film’s release. Once the film was finally released, the curiousity factor wore off, and the film tanked at box office. What a mess. |
