If You Haven't Checked Your Home Heating Oil...

Posted by SLRT on Wed Jan 3 16:11:45 2018

I have sufficient oil for months but I see there is a bit of a panic if you buy your oil on the fly, and a lot of people do.

I just got notice that my preferred vendor will only fill 100 gallons until sometime down the road and the earliest delivery is Saturday, three days from now and after the storm.

So I checked an aggregator and you're lucky for Saturday. Most can't deliver 'til Monday. And the price is up about 50 cents.

Now "all" I have to worry about is not losing electric. Is everyone else set?

Anybody buy a home generator?

Yeah... I'm down to almost nothing and more isn't coming until Saturday. I'm going to throw some diesel into the oil tank tonight. On the bright side, if we lose power it won't matter if we have oil or not...

Me too. It's definitely more convenient to have your hydrocarbons in gaseous form.

I'm assuming this is only if you buy COD. If you have a contract you get regular deliveries.

Right, you usually don’t go below a quarter tank and you’re also hooked in with the service contract so that you’re not last in line if something goes wrong with your furnace.

Up by me, you have to check your propane tanks too, if you have gas. No gas lines. I've seen smaller homes with two 120-lb tanks, but that would not be enough for heating a bigger home.

Converting from the old oil burner (which said "Esso") to gas heat in the old house back in NJ was the best thing we ever did.

I totally agree. Oil furnaces need almost yearly tune ups, natural gas runs cleaner and requirles less service.

That’s good if you’ve got natural gas out in the street but if all the choice you have is propane don’t bother; just upgrade your oil burner.

I use B20 Bio-Heat- 80% heating oil 20% Bio-Diesel. Best I ever seen my system run. The biggest problem is if you have an outdoor tank, with the cold it would separate. However, they do make a heater for in the tank.
As a bonus, NYS Tax Credit of $.20 per gallon if you use Bio-Heat.

Added 125 gallons right before Christmas, put me at almost full. Looking at the tank gauge now, you would think I only added 50 gallons.

Anybody buy a home generator?

Champion Dual Fuel. Not dealing with the headaches of trying to get gas after a storm. I have the option of using 6 20lb propane tanks if I can't get gas. Since half are swap tanks that I had refilled, if I need to swap them it is no loss.

The most I had seen from the supplier I use was $.07 more. However, they were running a promo of $10 off any order over 25 gallons. Seen another supplier who lost there mind with the price, $.25 over regular oil. Right now all bets are off given the temperature on L.I. And service wise it seems it helps. Last tune-up was April 2016, and so far so good.

Not a bad deal when you know you have at least a crisp "Hundo" with your name on it from the state.
