FCC Votes To Repeal Net Neutrality Rules

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Thu Dec 14 13:19:53 2017

The FCC has voted to repeal Net Neutrality rules promulgated during the Obama administration, clearing the way for service providers to assess extra charges to their customers for access to certain websites or platforms. The rules, which were meant to guarantee a level playing field for all sites and users, were scuttled by a 3-2 vote just a few minutes ago.

It's stupid because I hate Trump and wish for his presidential actions to be reversed when the time comes, but I still don't think that every action should be reversed for that reason alone. e.g. I would be opposed to any future president cancelling the move of the embassy to Jerusalem or moving it back to Tel Aviv* just because moving the embassy is something that Trump did.

So do you have an actual meritorious reason for supporting this action?

*Unless Israel formally moves its capital to Tel Aviv, but that's not happening.

Yes. It’s a no-brainer. Companies large and small are what made the internet what it is today. More government control is bound to ultimately make it both more expensive and worse. If the internet continues to get better it won’t be because governments stepped in to fix things.

This is not more government control. This is less corporate control. The internet grew in the era of a bunch of small ISPs, when there was a lot of competition. That era is dead now.

This, of course, is another issue. In America it seems that people fail to realize that the government belongs to the people and exists to protect the people from those who would usurp their rights. Except that here, people treat the government as if it were a communist or fascist state where the government is the enemy. Probably because our moribund system of elections and representation fails to represent the will of the people. Our government is the enemy because it really represents the acres, trees and dollars and not the people.

A lot of Americans would probably oppose the Clayton and Sherman antitrust acts if their provisions were synopsized for them. They are just clueless. And then they would blame government inaction for the price of oil going through the roof.

I’m not the slightest bit concerned about net neutrality. The internet wasn’t terrible back in 2015 without it and whether we have it or not, I don’t see my daily life being any different.

I don’t see the government as the enemy at all. What I do think is that a large portion of our government, especially in California, increasingly believes that it needs to protect us. They pass laws that have unintended consequences, things get worse, they pass laws to fix what they see as loopholes, more unintended consequences, things get even worse. And so on.

I guess that we all need to decide where the line is between protecting and interference. Do we want an FAA, an FDA, medical boards and licensing? I think so. And many more. But do we need governments deciding what size soft drink we can buy? Deciding to give fast food restaurants access to some areas of a city, but not others because they fear that residents will make poor choices?

I support free trade with foreign companies despite the fact that I know what you claim. Because I do not agree with the simplistic view that it puts American companies out of business and Americans out of work. Although it does hurt specific industries and might put specific companies out of business.

Years ago I watched Bowling for Columbine and there’s a part where Michael Moore talks about how we’ve been conditioned by both the government and the media to live in fear. In his mind that’s why so many Americans have guns that they don’t need.

If you pay attention the federal government - especially democrats - governs based on fear. It’s really just one thing after another. We go from one crisis to the next. If you’re a republican you’re afraid of Muslim terrorism. If you’re a democrat it’s right wing terrorism. Climate change, Ebola, gun violence, on and on. Almost always overstated with climate change being the exception. You wouldn’t know that crime is generally way down and maybe forgot that practically no one got Ebola.

It depends on how you phrase it. Look at how many people oppose the estate tax despite the fact that it doesn't affect them and is unlikely to affect them and at this point only affects the unambiguously rich.

According to a recent article in The Economist, it appears that opposition to estate and/or inheritance taxes is actually common in the OECD; it's not a purely American phenomenon.

The reason that I don’t post here much and when I do I say stuff like “it’s not important to me” is because I refuse to be controlled by fear. Especially politically based fear. I don't know. I don't particularly fear Muslim or right wing terrorism, Ebola, gun violence (admittedly I don't live in a dangerous part of Chicago, where Indiana imports are so handy), or climate change.

Though I do feel sorry for younger people who will suffer the consequences of climate change in a way that I won't live long enough to care about.

But I still support regulation. Just because I know I will always be able to afford the internet doesn't mean that I think that ISPs don't deserve to be subject to reasonable regulation.
