What Levine is accused of isn't inanity; it's serious criminality. The Met has known about the main accusation for a while and has swept it under the rug - if they had given it the attention it deserved they might not have felt pressured now to go to the other extreme. As for Franken, no one is firing him. Calling for him to resign is legitimate. He doesn't have to agree. He can let the Ethics Committee, which will follow a form of due process, decide on an appropriate remedy. As for Lopate, Schwartz, and Garrison Keillor, I wonder if their employers have overreacted. Unlike the others, there are no credible details of bad behavior coming out about any of them. |

If the cops track down and catch a criminal, and eyewitnesses say "he did. We saw it"; and his neighbors all say, "we've known he was a criminal for decades"; and his wife and kids say: "he told us he did it" -- do you still have to try him before sending him to the penitentiary? And if Franken resigns? Under what pressure? With what threats? You know a contract made under duress can be nullified. |

What is your point? No one is sending Levine to the penitentiary. What happened was that his employer fired him. I strongly suspect the firing was justified but can't prove it. What possible threats can be made to Franken to force him to resign? All the Democrats can do is take him off the committee assignments he's on. Plus of course if he stays there will be Ethics Committee hearings. I think that's a reasonable "threat": resign or else we will hold hearings to find out what if anything you've really done. |

No one is sending Levine to the penitentiary. He is being deprived of his livelihood, put into disgrace, and the people who elected have no say in it. All on unproven accusations. Yes, that, and being treated as a pariah by your peers and having your job made hell. I've worked at places where it was virtually impossible to fire anyone without very serious cause and [non-criminal] due process. But if someone seriously pissed off the management he/she was sent off to the office equivalent of Siberia, stripped of meaningful duties and powers, given petty tasks to do, and their staplers were taken away. |

Levine was not elected to anything. He was employed. And if the Met has abrogated contracts for future employment, they will need to pay him unless they can prove that his past behavior violated the terms of the contract. Further, they have not said a single disparaging word about him. And yes, Franken was told by his peers that if he didn't resign he would be treated as something of a pariah. What of it? Doing so on the basis of highly credible accusations is not unreasonable. |

Sixty-seven did not so choose. His party leadership forced him out.And I'm sure you acknowledge that 67 senators expelling him would be "due process." |

Absolutely nothing prevented him from saying "Screw you; bring on the Ethics Committee hearings." That's what Moore will say if elected. The reason Franken resigned is that he knows his continued presence in the Senate is adverse to maintenance of the principles he supports. |

By your logic, any defendant who pleads guilty rather than going to trial has been denied due process.Franken has resigned (pled guilty), rather than facing ethics committee hearings (pre-trial proceedings) and an expulsion vote (trial). |

A guilty plea is almost always attendant to a plea bargain, and you are pleading to a lesser offense, or there'd be no point. And, hypocritical as it may be you still have to go before a judge and fully admit to what is in the plea bargain "of your own free will."Franken did not exactly plead "guilty"; he sort of apologized but left with anger and implied martyrdom. IOW, he was railroaded "for the good of the party." |

Note that he said that some of the allegations were untrue. That means that he admits to some truly bad behavior. |
