The Met has known about the main accusation for a while and has swept it under the rug - if they had given it the attention it deserved they might not have felt pressured now to go to the other extreme.As for Franken, no one is firing him. Calling for him to resign is legitimate. He doesn't have to agree. He can let the Ethics Committee, which will follow a form of due process, decide on an appropriate remedy. As for Lopate, Schwartz, and Garrison Keillor, I wonder if their employers have overreacted. Unlike the others, there are no credible details of bad behavior coming out about any of them. |

And if Franken resigns? Under what pressure? With what threats? You know a contract made under duress can be nullified. |

I've worked at places where it was virtually impossible to fire anyone without very serious cause and [non-criminal] due process. But if someone seriously pissed off the management he/she was sent off to the office equivalent of Siberia, stripped of meaningful duties and powers, given petty tasks to do, and their staplers were taken away. |

Levine was not elected to anything. He was employed. And if the Met has abrogated contracts for future employment, they will need to pay him unless they can prove that his past behavior violated the terms of the contract. Further, they have not said a single disparaging word about him. And yes, Franken was told by his peers that if he didn't resign he would be treated as something of a pariah. What of it? Doing so on the basis of highly credible accusations is not unreasonable. |

A guilty plea is almost always attendant to a plea bargain, and you are pleading to a lesser offense, or there'd be no point. And, hypocritical as it may be you still have to go before a judge and fully admit to what is in the plea bargain "of your own free will."Franken did not exactly plead "guilty"; he sort of apologized but left with anger and implied martyrdom. IOW, he was railroaded "for the good of the party." |
