Procedure sucks, but having pre check definitely helps. As for the agents I have seen some really good ones and some really bad ones. You can definitely tell which ones enjoy interacting with the passengers and the ones who want to do the minimum possible to not get fired.

I heard that for $85.00, you can be pre-screened for 5 years, but you have to be interviewed for a background check.

You're talking about TSA Pre-Check. It's well worth the $85 if you're traveling more than once every few years.

My wife and I usually fly Jet Blue, using frequent flyer miles. We didn't sign up for the 5-year TSA-precheck status but I would say we get it more than 80% of the time that we fly (two or 3 times a year) - usually both of us, but sometimes only one of us. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.

You apply online and then you schedule an appointment at the location most convenient for you and they take your photo, scan your passport, and make sure that everything you said on your application is correct

"Mordita" is the bribe that corrupt government officials (including police) charge in Tijuana and similar places. But in the TSA's case, it's more like extortion.

Or, get Nexus. It is the "triple play" of Pre Check, Global Entry, and Canada's equivalent for only $50 total (so $35 cheaper than Pre Check alone). The catch is your info goes to the Canadian government as well (not a big deal) and you have to interview at the Canadian border (could cost more than $35 to get to the interview).

Global Entry is useful only if you're flying in from a foreign country. It's unnecessary for domestic travel.

It really is and it does allow for a tad more humane process at the airport. I don’t travel by air all that frequently (maybe a handful of times in a year and mostly for three day weekends where alternatives are not practicable)

I average 2 round trip flights a year, (this year was 3), and to me, $85,00 is worth peace of mind for 5 years.

Ok thank you, it worked. 95% of my travel is in the United States, and the rest is in Canada. So it really isn't worth it, although I had to bring in my passport to yesterday's interview.

It includes precheck. So signing up for precheck specifically is only useful for someone who never leaves the country.

But you have to go to a border town to sign up. I wish I had done that when I had the chance.
