Why did NYC ever honor a Nazi collaborator?

While I think this is a noble idea, ultimately it can't work. Pretty much every public figure who was ever honored had a skeleton in their closet, if you look hard enough. Washington and Jefferson owned slaves. JFK and RFK's father Joe Kennedy was a Nazi sympathizer. Charles Lindbergh was too. Robert Moses didn't like Jews or blacks (allegedly). Peter Stuyvesant wanted to keep Jews out of New Amsterdam. FDR had internment camps for Japanese-Americans. And so on.

If we start dismantling monuments to every person who ever held a belief that we consider today to be immoral and wrong, we won't have any monuments at all.

Because it was in 1931 before he was a Nazi collaborator.

And I'm opposed to removing these markers as they constitute a complete list of ticker tape parades. Removing the marker doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Are they going to go after St. Andrew's Cross and St. Patrick's Cross too for being similarly configured, I wonder?

And since I referenced Ireland, Gaelic football fans in Cork use the Confederate flag, although there's an effort to ban that at games, especially at Croke Park in Dublin.

It then becomes an issue of what is a symbol of hate. What books are we going to purge from our libraries. What paintings do we remove from our museums. You say that it's an innocuous purge of memorials to the Confederacy but ( and I hate the cliché) how do you stop once you start down that slope?

You obviously have never been to a library. Libraries get rid of books all the time. Usually it's because they have limited space and have no need to keep old books that nobody reads anymore and have a need to use that space for newer books that people actually want or which are useful for education. Biographies of Robert E. Lee aren't going to become more popular.

A typical library is not intended to be a universal repository of written materials like the Library of Congress.
