Had the original tree planted by Lee still been there, I would have left the plaque due to its historical value.

They should put up a historical plaque outside of Leon Trotsky's apartment in the Bronx. At least he didn't try to destroy this country.

Actually, I would keep the plaque even without the original tree. It's a historical marker. Perhaps the plaque can be replaced with one that doesn't imply any veneration of Lee (I don't know what the current plaque says).

Exactly. As long as the plaque didn't glorify him, it was an interesting "did you know?" tidbit about an action by a very historically relevant person.

I would say the same had the tree been planted by Hitler, Stalin or Usama bin Laden.

Nobody is asking to take down historical event markers from Civil War battlefields where Lee kicked America's ass. That's actual HISTORY!
