Ayn Rand is a Leftist talking point from the 80's when her book was big, before there was Rush Limbaugh or Fox News Channel and now Youtubers who appeal to the right.

Only the Left brings her and her book up.

New England is very Leftist and has the voting record to back it up.

Before you said you were spiritual. You cannot really be religious without being spiritual.

I used to be so called "spiritual", maybe. The line that I was Jewish but didn't know anything got on my nerves. Then I came to the conclusion that there are 3000 years worth of books. An unknowable amount of books.

They say one who doesn't know is an ignoramus. Between the resources of the internet, the unbelievable volumes of books around, and classes, there really is no excuse at all not to know anything.

The real problem is, where does one start? It's hard to find something appealing. I found some volumes of "sermons", called commentaries. In the 50's-70's this one Rabbi has a commentary that's about the stuff of the day, and he relates it back to the biblical stories. (About the NYSlimes, The Pope, the UN, the usual, but 40 years ago). They're entertaining, and dare I say educational, in a way that is "light" on Bible content. Because, in my opinion, it's not easy to just get into reading it, the way they portray Christians on television pretending to read random pages of the Bible as though it's a novel. Alternatively, This gets detailed, and I wonder if it's considered dry. Then there's really specific books, laws of this, commentary of that, headlines of the day, whatever.

The trouble is finding something to read. One sect is annoying, crying over Trump and ignoring religion altogether. The other side is too matter of fact imo, and some of it gets dry. I personally like the Jewish Mystics, though everyone else hates them. But then I'm "spiritual" I guess. The best, however, is the random JLI classes at any Chabad. It's always a useful subject for everyday living, or history, but they infuse biblical stories. The nice thing is they'll never corner you into coming more frequently, you can come and go. But then again, I don't live anywhere where they haev "mitzvah tanks", so I've never experienced large groups of them. The ones in the middle of nowhere places I live have claimed that they really love meeting people from all stripes.

In other words, it would be more authoritative to reject something you know more about, than to do so blindly.

You cannot really be religious without being spiritual.

Yes, you can. To be religious does not require adhering to one of the "traditional" religions. It simply implies living and acting according to firmly set beliefs. Those beliefs need not include anything in the spiritual realm.

Everybody who consciously considers anything and makes any sort of conscious decision is religious. They are depending on what they believe to be good, true, and/or beautiful and worth taking into account when making the decision.

I never once in my life called myself spiritual. I've not believed in any supernatural God since I was 12.

I don't agree that you can't be religious without being spiritual. The problem that I have is that I don't want to reject religion simply because I choose not to believe in fantasy. There are so many other things besides belief in a supernatural God.

Yesterday was nice. I gave up on the 90 year old building that the dodo's are rumored to want to sell off, so I didn't listen to some retired guy visiting from Massachusetts give me his opinion, and went to whatever I characterize the "community center" instead. I'd rather sit in a big place unnoticed, but I did get to dress the Torah. Not too bad.

I don't fully follow, in that this doesn't sound right. If I believe in a hard days work, and getting up before dawn, and having a pizza every wednesday, that firm set of belief isn't a religion per se. Although that's really far of a stretch, so instead, I'll give some of the blue city sayings I hear. I don't believe in war, and I refuse to settle down because "someone better and more hotter may come along". That's also not a religion. I'm not even sure if that's a philosphy.

maybe give me an example.

To quote the founders of the county, it's Natures God. There's nothing "supernatural" about it. It's not a conversation I want to flow towards though, I'm not here to convert people, unlike Mormans and Muzzies, I don't care that much about ppl. I'll only postulate these three things:

A) I had to suffer through so many science classes and genetics classes, that I thoroughly enjoyed, only to find out that the "science changed" and half of what I learned appears to be wrong. Did you hear this nonsense that peoples eye colors are more complicated than just brown being dominant, etc etc?

Leading to

B) It's fascinating that what George Carlin and Bill Mahar taught me is so far from what "religion" is supposed to be, that one feels as though they've been actively lied to. If you like diversity and learning about other people, it's an interesting subject.

C) Even if it were fantasy, you have to admit the Rabbi's 3300 years ago were pretty dang smart to come up with a guide on interpersonal relations and creating a relatively decent society! That alone makes it a worth the read.

What's more reactionary? Flat earth theories, global warming, or a blanket guesstimate against religion because it's just simply not as cool as worrying about a Free Gaza? For an example, not pointing fingers at you regarding free gaza.

You do so in such a swift and unknowing reactionary manner though. And the "supernatural" is such a Christian thing. Your rejection of the connection with nature shows that you should read a book or two at first, because the whole thing regarding miracles are all based in nature itself.

My original post was just some suggestions that it's nice to know what you are rejecting, because at least you have a reason for it. Judging from your confusion over nature and the so-called "supernatural"(what are you talking about St. Michael or something?), I'm going to have to secretly convert you.

I agree about the early episodes of DS9 too. The later ones seemed like they were trying to compete and copy Babylon 5. Voyager I have a hard time with, I want to follow through and watch all the seasons in the hopes that the show finds its footing later on.
