TL;dr: The underlying issue in the rule cut down is that you know who the mother is, you're not so sure about the father. In the case of immigration, it makes a difference when a child is born outside the U.S. to a couple where only one is provably a citizen, therefore paternity can count as to whether the child is a U.S. citizen at birth.Now the rules are to be equal. Interestingly, this reflects on whether a child is Jewish or not if the mother or the father is not Jewish. Derived wisdom says that Jewishness passes from the mother in a distinctly patriarchal religion. More rudely, it says that you don't know who the shiksa has been sleeping with. With DNA testing this should no longer be an issue. |
