But the sentiment was so strong pro-war, based on bad intelligence, that it was hard to say no. I remember some stupid effort to re-label French Fries to "Freedom Fries" out of contempt for France for not backing us on the Iraq war.It was also very difficult for anyone to be pro-Gay marriage 10 - 15 years ago without being labeled a fringe candidate. I don't really car about public/private opinion difference. I will judge by their voting record and don't care if they grit their teeth, go home, and kick the cat over it. Abortion is privately opposed by Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Tim Kaine, and Mario Cuomo due to their religion, but they a are careful not to legislate their religion. Protestants feared JFK as a Catholic, with the Pope dictating his social policies. But now the Fundamenalists are trying to do exactly what they feared the Catholics would do - legislate their faith. |

There were Liberal Republicans (Lowell Weicker- the last of them, Rockefeller, Javits), and there were Conservative Democrats (Lieberman, Southern Democrats).The horrible racist and Democrat George Wallace had nothing in common with the Kennedy's, and they were different in a lot of ways from LBJ. MLK was a Republican. I am fine with NAFTA with Canada, but not Mexico. No CAFTA, and I think TPP would be abused as well. I don't trust corporate America to benefit Main Street America, just Wall Street, and their short-term focus. |
