By Doug Gross (Patch Staff) October 18, 2016 5:53 pm ET To some, it may seem like an apt metaphor — one of the major political parties dumping raw sewage in public in the middle of an election year. But the Democratic National Committee is apologizing for what it calls "an honest mistake" after a charter bus company worker improperly dumped human waste outside an auto parts shop in Lawrenceville. According to a Lawrenceville Police report, officers were called to the O'Reilly Auto Parts on Grayson Highway on Tuesday morning at about 10:40 a.m. There, an employee told police he saw an RV associated with the DNC stop in a turn lane in front of the store. He said he saw someone get out of the RV and open a sewage drain, letting raw sewage spill out onto the road and into a storm drain. An officer wrote that he saw drying toilet paper and that there was a foul smell where the RV had parked. A Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services hazmat team was called to clean up the spill. It was unclear Tuesday afternoon whether there would be any criminal charges associated with the incident. A spokesman for Lawrenceville Police said the case has been turned over to the state Environmental Protection Division. In a written statement, a DNC spokesperson apologized for the dumping. "This was an honest mistake and we apologize to the Lawrenceville community for any harm we may have caused," the statement reads. "We were unaware of any possible violations and have already taken corrective action with the charter bus company to prevent this from happening again. Furthermore, the DNC will work with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, as well as local and state officials to determine the best course of corrective action."

Sewage from the Dave Mathews Band tour bus was dumped into the Chicago River in 2005. Of course, that was slightly different, since it was dumped directly onto 100 people in a boat.
