My friend played one of Roy Hobbs teammates Allie Stubbs.Bang the Drum Slowly is a fine film with some nice shots of old Yankee Stadium and Shea. I like The Bad News Bears because of Matthau and Vic Morrow. |

My favorite part of the movie is toward the end, when Babe is getting older and losing his prodigious power. After a 1934 season in which he only hit 22 homers, knocked in 84 runs and hit .288 at age 39, he asks Yankees owner, beer magnate "Colonel" Ruppert, if he would be considered for the Yankees managerial job someday. Ruppert basically tells Ruth that he's not cut out to be a manager and since his homers were declining, released him. Babe then signs on with the Boston Braves, a terrible club, as a player and as assistant manager but soon finds that the manager won't listen to him. Babe plays in only 28 games for the Braves in 1935 and hits just .181 but in his last game, he hit three home runs. In the movie, Goodman lumbers around the bases like a fat old man in pain (which is was Ruth probably was by then) and when he reaches home plate after the third homer, he throws his cap on the ground to signify that he was done. |
