An argument I used to have is that why do people want incompetent outsiders to run their government, they wouldn't want an incompetent surgeon who's a "medical outsider" to perform heart surgery. But then I realized how many people are anti-vaxxers and into new age medicine and claim that doctors are in the pocket of "big pharma" or some other bullshit and it all starts to make sense. Too many people are antiïntellectual idiots who think that "regular people" are more qualified to decide anything without any useful knowledge than someone with all that fancy "book learnin'." |

A problem is that sometimes "knowledgeable professionals" fall prey to medical fads or use drugs for their convenience rather than the patient's best interest.For example, the routine use of Ritalin in children to make them more tractable for the therapist even when not medically necessary. And politically saying "incompetent outsiders" is begging the question. An outsider is not by definition incompetent nor is an insider guaranteed to look after the broad public interest. |
