What idiot decided to build a stadium without a retractable roof in the first place?

False. Geez, you been taking lessons from Bingbong?

No new taxes will be used for the stadium. Instead, the half-cent sales tax, 2 percent hotel occupancy tax and 5 percent car rental tax being used to pay for the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium would essentially be re-purposed. That's for Arlington's 50%. The Rangers will pay the other 50%.

That was 24 years ago. How many baseball stadiums were built with a roof 24 years ago? Answer - one. The first domed baseball stadium was Rogers Centre in Toronto, built in 1989. Globe Life Park in Arlington was built in 1992.

Check your facts before bloviating.

Yep, and a few other fixed-dome stadiums in between (Olympic Stadium in Montreal, although ironically, that was supposed to be the first retractable roof stadium (albeit with a different retractable method than what we are now used to), but it didn't work out, Metrodome in Minneapolis (gone now), Kingdome in Seattle (also gone)). I agree that Dave probably meant retractable.

Traditions don't generate profits.

The current Rangers ballpark is not Wrigley Field or Fenway Park where people pay to go for the sake of experiencing the ballpark itself.
It's a tired faux-retro 90's creation like Turner Field in Atlanta or The Jake in Cleveland.

The Rangers smartly want the taxpayers to foot the bill so that club shareholders can reap greater profits with zero risk.

Wouldn't you do the same in their place?

why should the Rangers wait until there are structural flaws in their current ballpark to move into a new venue that will immediately generate more revenue?

No business would wait for its current factory, store, warehouse or office HQ to be falling apart when taxpayers are willing to foot the bill for a newer and more profitable up-to-date facility.

I agree cities have always drawn the short end of the stick paying for stadiums ESPECIALLY when that team's owner will own that stadium(ex FL Marlin's new stadium). But as long as cities line up to finance teams stadiums/arena's it will always happen. And for existing cities with team no politician want to be the one who let the _____'s pack up and leave town.

Safeco field in Seattle opened seven years later in 1999, but IINM that was due to problems with the financing. I believe it was being designed with a retractable roof in the early 1990s, but problems with securing municipal bonds and the defeat of a ballot measure delayed construction into the late 90s. Globe Life could easily have been built with a retractable roof in the early 90s, I'm not sure why you're quite so defensive about this.
