John Kasich comes in second in New Hampshire

Trump takes N.H. and predicts more wins to come, as Kasich finishes second

By David Jackson
10:28 p.m. EST February 9, 2016
Billionaire businessman Donald Trump rode his anti-establishment message to an easy win in the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich running a distant second and other GOP rivals far behind.

"We learned a lot about ground games in one week!" Trump told cheering supporters in Manchester just eight days after finishing second in the Iowa caucuses.

Having ascended the stage to the sounds of The Beatles song Revolution, Trump predicted victory down the line and told New Hampshire voters: "Remember, you started it!"

Kasich hailed his second-place finish as a tribute to his positive message, telling supporters "the light overcome the darkness of negative campaigning."

After Kasich, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former Florida governor Jeb Bush battled it out for third place, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio appeared headed to what he called a disappointing fifth place finish in New Hampshire. (Cruz, who edged Trump last week in the Iowa caucuses, made a congratulatory call to him Tuesday night in New Hampshire, aides said.)

Further back in the New Hampshire pack: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Early returns indicated that Trump might get double the vote of his nearest competitor, Kasich.

While Trump entered primary day as the betting favorite, the other candidates jostled for position as part of an overall battle to become the main alternative to the New York billionaire in upcoming Republican contests. Many of the New Hampshire candidates planned to leave immediately for South Carolina, site of the next Republican primary on Feb. 20.

Candidates and their aides had acknowledged that Trump was the favorite in New Hampshire, but had hoped for a smaller-than-expected margin of victory.

Rubio, who finished a strong third last week in Iowa but had a poorly reviewed debate performance on Saturday, blamed himself for what appeared to be a fifth-place finish. "Our disappointment is not on you, it's on me," he told supporters. "I did not do well on Saturday night. But listen to me: That will never happen again."

The New Hampshire primary was the first contest since Cruz won Iowa last Monday. While New Hampshire has fewer evangelical voters than Iowa, the Texas senator hoped for a strong showing in the Granite State.

Reminding reporters of his Iowa win during a campaign stop Tuesday, Cruz responded to attacks from Trump by saying, "Donald does not handle losing very well."

Kasich, Bush and Christie, meanwhile, spent the bulk of their campaign time in New Hampshire and saw it as a make-or-break state for their White House hopes.

Like other candidates, they hit polling places, television studios, call-in radio shows, the Internet, and social media in their last-minute appeals for votes.

Kasich, who like Christie and Bush has argued that gubernatorial experience is better preparation for the presidency, said he was "calm" as New Hampshire officials prepare to count ballots.

"I can't explain it other than we've done everything we need to do here and it's in the hands of the voters," he told MSNBC's Morning Joe.

Bush, the son and brother of previous presidents who touted his executive experience in Florida, appealed to voters via social media.

He tweeted: "Closing my time in New Hampshire the same way I began: giving it my all, speaking to every voter and being true to what I believe."

Christie, who earned positive reviews for a debate performance Saturday in which he hit Rubio for his habit of repeating the same sound bites over and over, emailed supporters a video of his remarks at a recent town hall in New Hampshire.

"I want to do as well as I possibly can," the New Jersey governor said.

Like Trump, Fiorina and Carson both campaigned in the Granite State largely against the current political establishment.

"Maybe we will wake up and recognize that it was politicians who created our problems," Carson told Fox News.

Fiorina, who had protested her exclusion from Saturday's debate because of low poll numbers, told supporters in New Hampshire that she intends to "keep going," despite the prospect of a low finish.

As is tradition, voting in New Hampshire began shortly after midnight in the tiny hamlets of Dixville Notch, Millsfield and Hart's Location: Trump, Cruz and Kasich all tied with nine votes.

Robert McKim, 92, said he decided very early on that he was going to support Trump.

"He is paving his own way … he has a controversial nature, but he'll learn to overcome it. He's smart," McKim said outside of a polling location in Manchester. "We need someone who will speak their mind"

Ridge, former homeland security chief, endorses Kasich

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has won the endorsement of Tom Ridge, a former director of homeland security and Pennsylvania governor.

Ridge had been supporting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush for president since early 2015 and joined him on the campaign trail in South Carolina.

Bush quit the race Saturday after a disappointing finish in the Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.

Kasich's campaign says Ridge is signing on as a national co-chairman.

Kasich: I'll drop out if I lose Ohio

By Harper Neidig
February 27, 2016, 04:47 pm
Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich said on Saturday that he will drop out of the race if he doesn't win his home state of Ohio.

"I will beat Donald Trump in Ohio, and that will be the beginning of a new day," Kasich told a crowd in Nashville, according to the New York Times.

"Some of the other candidates, if they can't win their home state, they got to get out, OK?" he added. "If I don't win my home state, I'll get out. But you know what? I'm going to win Ohio."

The remark was a dig at his rival Marco Rubio, who is trailing Trump by 16 points in his home state of Florida, according to a recent Quinnipiac University poll.

Ohio goes to the polls on March 15. Another Quinnipiac poll puts Trump ahead of Kasich in Ohio by 5 percentage points, just outside the poll's margin of error, but the governor has insisted that he will have no problem winning the state.

Arnold Schwarzenegger endorses John Kasich

By Eric Bradner, CNN
Updated 4:03 PM ET, Sun March 6, 2016
Arnold Schwarzenegger is endorsing Ohio Gov. John Kasich for the Republican presidential nomination — and he's doing it in what appears to be the first high-profile endorsement to come on Snapchat.

"I want John Kasich to be the next nominee of the Republicans and also to be the next president of the United States," Schwarzenegger said, holding a phone that he then turned to Kasich. "Here he is."

Kasich said: "Thanks, Arnold. Love you, man."

Schwarzenegger is also set to campaign with Kasich on Sunday.

The endorsement from the two-term former California governor comes as moderate Republicans ramp up an effort to block Donald Trump from winning the party's nomination.

It comes ahead of two crucial contests for Kasich: Michigan's March 8 primary, followed by Ohio's 66-delegate winner-take-all primary.

Signature Controvery Could Keep Kasich Off the PA Primary Ballot

By Marilyn Smith • Mar 10, 2016
A last minute objection to ballot signatures filed by Governor Kasich could keep the GOP presidential hopeful off the Pennsylvania primary ballot next month.

Reporter Karen Langley wrote about the dispute for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Langley says at issue are 192 votes an objector says are invalid. She says a lawyer for Governor Kasich concedes but says the objection came after the filing deadline.

Langley says it’s likely the matter will be decided by a three-judge panel.

Langley says a recent poll shows Republican presidential candidates Marco Rubio and Governor Kasich closely trailing front-runner Donald Trump in Pennsylvania.

Boehner endorses Kasich days before primary

By Keith BieryGolick
9:01 p.m. EST March 12, 2016
Republicans in Butler County honored former Speaker John Boehner three days before residents across Ohio's 8th District will vote on his replacement in Congress.

But on Saturday, Boehner was more interested in talking about the presidential race.

One day before Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is scheduled to speak in West Chester, Boehner endorsed Ohio Gov. John Kasich for president.

In fact, the former speaker told a crowded ballroom in the same township he already voted for Kasich.

"He's my friend," said Boehner.

It was Boehner's first public appearance in the area since he retired last year.

In February, Boehner delivered a speech on the threat posed by Iran at a hotel in downtown Washington. He stayed on message and, after the speech, sped by a cluster of reporters trying to ask him about the presidential race.

But on Saturday, Boehner talked about the late Carlos Todd, one of the most influential members of Butler County's Republican Party. Todd died in October. Both were honored at a Lincoln Day dinner for the county's Republican Party.

Boehner also reflected on his time as Speaker.

"I have no regrets about how I retired or when I retired," Boehner said. "Every day I'm grateful I'm not there."

Saturday was a good day for Boehner.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted and other elected officials each took turns praising Boehner and his time in office.

West Chester Township Trustee George Lang, a friend of Boehner's, told the crowd he was the "best speaker ever."

It was the type of day Boehner had fewer and fewer of during his time in Congress. It's why the race to replace him is so interesting. Many of the same congressmen and conservative groups responsible for his exit have poured money into the 8th District race.

Their goal: Elect someone who is not like Boehner.

In an Enquirer editorial board meeting last month, a majority of the five candidates interviewed said they would not have voted for Boehner again. Last week, the Wall Street Journal wrote an article about Boehner's crumbling legacy.

Boehner didn't directly acknowledge this narrative Saturday, but spoke like he had heard it a lot.

"I'm still the same Jack today that I was when I walked in (to Congress) 25 years ago," Boehner told the crowd. "Some guys might say I'm too much like me. But I was always going to be just me."

Perhaps the best example of this came when he was introduced by Ohio Supreme Court Justice Sharon Kennedy. She told the crowd Boehner's only shortcoming was he didn't take enough credit for what he did for the American people.

Boehner gave her a long hug as he took the stage. It was an emotional moment.

"All she was trying to do was make me cry," Boehner said. "It's not hard to do."

Kasich endorsed by Senator who originally backed Rubio

10:54 AM, Mar 19, 2016
John Kasich is picking up the endorsement of Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, who previously backed Marco Rubio.

Inhofe says in a statement released by the Kasich campaign that he is backing the Ohio governor because he has a proven record of delivering results.

Inhofe says Kasich's optimistic campaign is "refreshing" and calls Kasich a man his word.
