Which it was. France was controlled by the German military at that point in the war so the Allies were attacking German-held territory. |

The Germans were defending Fortress Europe (the Axis term for the Occupied Territories) from what Eisenhower himself described as the "invasion" of Normandy in his history of the war, Crusade In Europe. |
