That's why I like Trader Joe's. They've got the best store brand products.

Yeah, that's why we buy the big tins. Lasts quite a while, and if you keep them properly sealed, they last a LONG while. Even though there's just two of us, buying in bulk and having an actual large pantry and large freezer does make a difference. :)

Kinda hard to do that in an apartment of course.

The "unhealthy temptations" are fine as long as you pay your penance the rest of the time. There's nothing I enjoy more than the sin of fried dough, corn dogs, and lots of taco salad with cheese. :)

But yeah, if you're going to obsess, might as well stay home. Heh.

I *love* county fairs and hanging out with the carneys discussing what it was like in the old days when I took care of some Coney Island amusement electronics. Some things never change, and they're always happy to talk shop with folks who have done that before. (grin)

Around here, we get grass fed beef from the farmers themselves. The coop has superb local meats as well as fabulous chicken from Vermont. Why pay Whole Paycheck's profit when that money can go to an actual neighbor that's keeping you well fed? Prices run about the same......you pay for the quality you get.

To keep oil, store it tightly covered in a place where it's less likely to be jostled around. Back of a cabinet/cupboard works fine. Don't want to oxidize the stuff. I get al ost a year out of a can by pouring out enough to use for a month or so into a smaller can. Mine is not as nice as this one, but I'd always appreciate a gift. :-)

Thank you in advance! :-)

1. Some people need to ditch gluten, others just want to. But for most people, it’s not necessary.

About 1 in 100 people — about 1 percent — have celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disease that causes damage to the small intestine when gluten is ingested.

About .4 percent of people have a doctor-diagnosed wheat allergy, according to a 2006 study. In those people, a true allergic response to wheat (which contains gluten) can include skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms.

A larger group of people is estimated to have what’s called “non-celiac gluten sensitivity,” which may also produce similar symptoms but is not very well understood by experts. “We don’t really know the mechanism by which this arises,” says Sheila Crowe, M.D., a spokesperson for the American Gastroenterological Association and a professor in the division of gastroenterology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. According to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, as many as 18 million Americans have some non-celiac sensitivity to gluten.

People without symptoms may consider avoiding gluten for health reasons, says Crowe. “There’s more of a modern concern that gluten is somehow not good for us,” she says, possibly linked to our transition from hunter-gatherers to cultivators and farmers and the simultaneous increase of grains in our diet. But there’s little evidence proving going gluten-free means good health, she says.

Wrong. I just see Whole Paycheck as part of the problem. Do bear in mind that in most urban areas that's as good as it gets. We live out here where being a locavore works well.

Do bear in mind that those farmers also support the people working for the processor, also neighbors, i'd rather see the profits go to them. Megacorps (in this sector tWF is one) take advantage of them.

A Love Supreme :-)

My Favorite Things - were you listening to the studio version, or the live at Newport version (posthumously released on the Impulse album Selflessness). Jimmy Garrison is on this live version.

I know and love the McCoy Tyner solo on the live version - yes, that one is surely spiritual.

I'm more familiar with the live version than the studio, that's the one I heard first around the spring of 1970.

During the fall 70 into mid '71 I went into NYC, Slugs Saloon (242 E. Third St.) several times to hear Tyner's quartet. Listening to him those nights he went deep; the same kind of playing he did on the Newport My Favorite Things. Four sets or so - from about sometime after 10 pm, until 3:30 - 4 am..... Herbie Lewis - bass, Freddie Waits - drums, Sonny Fortune - alto sax.....

Time For Tyner is a wonderful album as is his playing on one or more Joe henderson albums. The much later, double LP Supertrios album on Milestone (late 1970s) is very good too.

And you don't support local grocers? I buy some produce in season at the local farmer's market but I also shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods because not only is their food good quality but they hire local residents. Sounds like you don't care whether or not your neighbors are employed but you've got yours so the hell with everyone else. Sure sounds quite democratic to me there.

Other comments,

Trader Joe's is nothing like WF. WF has much more organic to select from. Trader does not even sell frozen peaches. No kombucha. No Amaranth. I don't think they sell grass fed beef. Pasture raised eggs. Much of the produce is conventional and poor quality.

WF customers are legit foodies. Everyone is on a special diet. Has allergies. Too passionate about what they eat and don't eat.
