:(

I was not a Dodger fan for most of the time that I lived in Southern California (20+ years), but I often viewed Dodger games on TV to hear one of the best baseball broadcasters of all time. Wish I could get out to L. A. next year to hear one of his final broadcasts.

Ernie Harwell, the late broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers was the best.

Vin Scully is the best that still lives.

Vin is the best there ever was and the Dodgers will lose their best identity when he leaves. I lived in Queens when he came on board in April of 1950 and couldn't believe how youthful he was. He reminded me of one of my teenage friends. The fact is it took me a couple of years to get used to him, but that could be because the main Dodger spokesman was Red Barber who I grew up with as an early baseball fan. Weird, though, because today I totally despise the Dodgers.

There was a book written about a decade ago that rated the best baseball announcers of all time and Scully was rated No. 1 by a large margin. I don't know what criteria the author used but there it was. Ernie Harwell started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in mid-1948 when Red Barber took ill for a month and then went to the Giants in 1950 and was replaced by Vin Scully. After the '53 season he went to Baltimore and then to Detroit in 1960 where he achieved real fame,

Well now, you all know how long in the tooth I am.

Karl---I most certainly remember both Connie Desmond and Ernie Harwell. Desmond was Red Barber's partner in the postwar years and when Red left the Dodgers after the 1953 season after dueling with that asshole O'Malley, Connie was supposed to become the No. 1 man and he did in 1954 but there was that serious drinking problem of his and in 1955 Vin Scully became the No. 1 man in the broadcast booth. I think Connie has taken a leave that year and finally left for good around the first of September, 1956 and was replaced by Jerry Doggett.

As for Harwell I mentioned him in a post yesterday. He was with the Dodgers as No. 3 man from mid 1948 to the end of the 1949 season when he then went to the Giants.

In listening to both Barber and Desmond back then I grew very fond of Desmond and really liked his play by play narrative. I was only 11 or 12 years old at the time and had no knowledge of Desmond's drinking problem.

I realize that Barber was supposedly the most popular of the two but i still would rather hear Desmond's voice. There was nothing better in those days than listening to play by play on the radio.

When they traded Eddie Miksis to the Cubs in '51 in an eight player deal I sort of soured on baseball in general and the Dodgers in particular.

That '51 trade was supposed to be the clincher for the pennant for the Dodgers since we got Andy Pafko in that deal. "Handy" Andy had hit 36 homers the year before, hit over 300 and drove in 100 or so runs. However, we all know how that turned out in '51. Andy also didn't do all that well with Brooklyn and later admitted he missed Chicago. In '52 he gave up the #22 he was stuck with and was able to get back his beloved #48 and had a good year for the Dodgers and helped them win the NL Pennant. For his reward, they traded him to the Braves in the off season to save some money.

There was something else sort of different in that trade.

Terwilliger got Miksis' 34.

Pafko got Hermanski's 22

Walker got Edwards' 10

Schmitz got Hatton's 19

Do you think that Brooklyn was being economical about uniforms back then?

I spoke to Miksis on the phone about 15 years ago, not long before he passed away, and he was still bitter about having to leave Brooklyn. He really loved the Dodgers.

Most who played for Brooklyn in the post war years until they deserted that borough loved playing for the Dodgers. One who did not was Dick Williams who almost beat Pafko out when Andy got injured early in the season. Then Dick ran into a wall in St. Louis and was out for the rest of the season. As I remember he wound up hitting 309 or thereabouts. Dick always thought the Dodgers were clickish and that he would never be excepted by the "so called in crowd", which later I learned was Reese, Snider, R. Walker, Roe and Erskine. To me that was sour grapes because I met The Duke at card shows and reunions, and met Erskine at the Sr. Babe Ruth World Series and later in a reunion at the miserable LA Coliseum which passed for a baseball field for four years only because that greedy bastard O'Malley was less interested in playing in a baseball and instead wanted to load his pockets with money. It was right away in 1958 that I turned on the Dodgers and have despised them to this very day.

Fred,

I am having internet problems here and have been down for 3 days.

I left NY in Sept of '57 and went off to college in PA as a 21 year old freshman.

College was quite a challenge after four years in the working world and baseball was the farthest thing from my mind in those days.
