Question for any suit wearers, or even "old" people. |
|
Posted by orange blossom special on Tue Jul 28 17:19:08 2015 This seems like a stretch because I don't think there is any classy people on OTchat, But I've taken an interest in suits/tailoring and am curious. The style of men buttoning their coat, but the bottom of their tie still sticks out. Is that a new thing, or did this happen decades ago? I never see this in any old shows, movies, or images though to the 1970's, but I see it nearly all the time now. Actually, I was surprised to see this in a photo in NY since it's the people outside of the NE who wear their suits crappily like school uniforms. NY Daily News |

Didn't happen decades ago either except for the gauche. Perhaps some kind soul might send him this photo as a guide. :) |

I have ties from many years ago that are in perfectly good condition because I wear a suit maybe 1-2x a year. Back then they would hang down to my belt, maybe even a touch below. Now they barely make it past that half-way point that far. Why? Blame it on a big belly! |

When I used to wear a three piece suit (we used to call it a "vested" suit), I used to wear the bottom button of the vest undone and allowed the necktie to be seen in the open space. My brother, a clothes horse if there ever was one, told me that was the style. I don't think I've worn a vested suit since the '80s, though. |

It looked like most of the shows in the 70's men wore vests.(it looks like "all" is more apt than most). I think the term vested sounds better than 3-piece since you mentioned it.I know the bottom button stays unbuttoned, which creates the shirt/tie sticking out scenario I've linked to. But I cannot find an old photo, movie, tv show where that is occuring. Unless back then the bottom button did get buttoned, and leaving it unbuttoned is "new". I think it looks sloppy to have the tie stick out like so from the bottom. after a quick google search with the usual "college" how-to sites and photos, i'm thinking this may be something to do with the fit of the jacket perhaps. |

The third guy is wearing a hat. The director of Sin City and 300 says it's a crime men don't wear hats anymore.I think the hat offsets the faux pas of male #3, and he gets a pass. |
