Anyone in to old time top-40 radio that I grew up on should go to Rewoundradio.com, follow the links & be swept back in time to hear airchecks of the old WABC when it was a music station.NYC Radio greats such as Dan Ingram & Ron Lundy are showcased as are all the other "All Americans" as they were called back then. The music, the sound,& even some of the old newscasts of the day are replayed.

One news item broadcast, after Viet Nam updates, was the fight that was going on to establish a Conn. state lottery. Back then in Ct., (mid 60s) if you got caught with more than five lottery tickets from anywhere, you could be tossed in jail! Never knew that.

Anyway, they do this every year at this time. Its a worthwile listen IMO, to when top-40 radio was king of the dial & WABC was the "ratings steamroller flattening the opposition" (FM dominance was still years away) as one of their promos boasted. They'll be doing this till Monday night

Good to hear Dandy Dan again, though the music is a little before me.

I listened to WABC from 1968 to 1971, when I moved to Illinois for 3 years. When I returned, I listened to 99X (WXLO), but every once in awhile, I would tune into ABC, until I departed fro L. A. in August 1976. They were OK, I guess.

99X. Interesting place. Does anyone remember a particular DJ with a REALLY weird voice there named "Barney Pip?" :)

WXLO! I loved that station when I was in HS! I used to listen to the top 10(20?), followed by the top 40 right after (I think it was Mike McCann who hosted that). I really hated it when it became 98.7 KISS-FM - I had to scramble to find another station, and then that one changed too.

I was just about the music, I don't remember one personality from X. I do remember that they were obsessed with Elton John around 1974-75 (not a bad call, as Sir Elton was printing money during this time period). Also, they seemed to get most records like 2-3 months later. For example, the great song "Taking care of business" by Bachmann-Turner Overdrive. For most people around the country, that was a summer of 1974 song. Not at X, they were playing it during the fall. Caused me some trouble when I wanted to buy it, but I got it eventually. Don't know if this was just X doing this all all the NYC stations. And there were some pretty good songs, that made it into the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 that they didn't play at all, like this one:

I didn't know any better at the time, but looking back, they really were not a good Top 40 station.

I listened only briefly and happened to catch a news report of the August 13, 1962 LIRR collision at Woodside.

" ...a news report of the August 13, 1962 LIRR collision at Woodside"

I heard that newscast too. Brought back memries of that day. A crane collapsed & hit a passing train in the area of Queens Blvd & 65th Pl. I witnessed the aftermath with all the awe & curiosity that a then ten yr old can contain. It ripped open the front quarter of one of their old MP-70 double decker cars that were in service at the time.
I believe there were two fatalities.

Thats the point of "Rewound Radio". to bring back memories, both good & not so good.

Been listening to it since you posted this, and it's been really cool! I love how they have complete shows, with commercials and news. Also heard a lot of songs I haven't heard in a long time. Thanks again for sharing the link!

X was owned by RKO General (the WOR people) and in NYC, the "needle drop" fees were different for primary use and secondary use (wait a few months and the cost per play dropped substantially). RKO was a bunch of cheap bastards, that's why that was. :)

You're quite welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed! Not only the music & the jocks that were front & center stars of the show, The news items that reflected times of the 60s were quite interesting. Its an audio page of history. Commercials, the prices of stuff back then, the cigarette commercials, political news bits, all part of the mosaic that we lived thru. We survived, but for those who did not, this is their day, lest we forget.
