Interesting to read. No pat answers.

What a crock of unnecessary right wing shit. And shame on him for using what happened here to defend his sanctimonious political pap. Sorry, but fuck him.

And here's hoping the right will smack him for "defending Islam," but they won't. He's one of them. It's like THIS crap where the republican orphans who screwed up the recovery and took food out of the mouths of babies all these years since their economic crash are trying to peddle that they're the voice of the downtrodden whose minions they served all these years in turning the American economy upside down for tax cuts and suddenly we're supposed to buy that they're now on OUR side?

I'm reminded of Howard Beale when he finally had enough.

I read Trudeau's article when it came out.
I agree with him.

It's why I've never jumped on the "Je Suis Charlie" bandwagon.

"Freedom" means having the legal right to do something. It doesn't mean I have to endorse the end product of that right.

"Charlie Hebdo's" cartoons always struck me as the stuff of 6th graders.
Neither original nor insightful.

Like drawing your teacher shaped as a penis on the wall in the boy's restroom .

Douthat, being the typical right-wing scum, misrepresented what Trudeau actually said.

Precisely as far as your summation. However, FREEDOM also guarantees the right to be an asshole otherwise most of the participants here would have been taken out back and shot a LONG time ago.

Freedom is a dangerous thing ... it guarantees the right to be an asshole as long as you don't harm others. Charlie Hedbo fell into that category which is why I still proudly declare, "Je Suis".

Hundreds of thousands gave their lives to guarantee the right to be an asshole.

I honor those who gave their lives for those freedoms, not those who benefitted from it.

I'll agree there too, but it's all part of the reason why people DO have a Constitutional right to be an asshole unless they harm others. The trick is defining the boundaries of "harm" and sadly of late, those definitions have been narrowing.

If you'd been around in the 1960's, you might have seen "East Village Other" and "RAT: Subterranean News" and other examples of assholes who had access to newsprint. I worked for some of them as "counterbalance" and it curled my toes sometimes. But then again, "I will protect your right to be an asshole". That's what separates America from ISIS.

If a bunch of Teabaggers were to attack and kill members of the US Communist Party, they should be prosecuted and given the maximum sentence.

However I'm not gonna go around saying "Je Suis Communiste" like a phony just because I dislike Teabagging terrorists and agree with the Communist Party's right to disseminate its ideas.

Fuck the Communists. Charlie Hebdo is a Communist publication.

I'm wondering if you actually understand the French "I fart in your general direction" mindset? :)

It's VERY Parisien. And yeah, France has always been a bit left leaning. To each their own. My own attitude towards Hedbo is that they pretty much satirized everyone pretty much equally. If they took sides, I might have a different opinion. To my OWN mind, folks in their own worlds have a right to that which they choose. That's why I live upstate. :)

I agree. However, members of the US Communist party should not be in fear of their lives (and aren't) because of the crap they say. The government needs to protect them, as the US government does. Hopefully, Europe can figure out how to protect assholes (and Jews too, by the way, who of course are another target) without violating the civil liberties of all.
