School District Losing Thousands in School Lunch Sales

Updated: Thursday, March 26 2015, 12:20 PM EDT
Thousands of students have now stopped buying lunch each week in Buncombe County cafeterias.

The district says it all started when schools were forced to implement the USDA's Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act. It was part of first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" initiative to get kids to eat healthier.

All of a sudden, kids are pitching pounds of food in the garbage.

"I like vegetables too, like I like spinach and potatoes — great — but they just don't have any flavor at all," freshman Aislinn French said.

The 2010 Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act slapped strict salt regulations on schools saying nothing but whole grains, and now fruit and veggies must be on the tray. It they're not on there, the cashier must put them there for students.

Hundreds of kids have now dropped out of the lunch program. Over the last two years, Buncombe County says they've lost about $1.2 million in sales. It's downsized its staff, equipment is getting old and the current menu has less options.

"North Carolina was the third state in the nation to be in compliance with the USDA regulations of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act and we have been punished severely with declining participation," Buncombe County nutrition director Lisa Payne said.

It's mostly federal money that keeps Buncombe cafeteria food on the table.

Payne said she's doing her best to work around these regulations; she's trying to cook more from scratch and get the freshest produce. She says, like Haywood County, she's gotten a waiver from the government so she can make southern-style biscuits again.

This belongs in The Spider-Pig Diet II thread.

Anyway, "nothing" but whole grains, fruits and veggies? I wonder if they mean in addition to meat?

For example, chicken, brown rice, and mixed veggies?

If kids really could not get nothing but grains and veggies, the Vegan community would be claiming victory. And since they're not saying much about this, I wonder if there is more to this story?

I could go on a long rant about whole grains and fruits but will wait to do so.

Do you think I'm right about the government eventually trying to force everyone onto a Vegan diet?

Given just who embraces vegetarianism/veganism, the possibility remains open.

I know what the local cows eat, and it's good. One of the advantages of living out in farm land is that the farmers here eat what they sell, know what's good and what isn't, and won't let us buy anything they won't let their own kids eat. Life is good, and Monsanto and the others don't sell much out here. :)

Vegans are the Occupy Wall Street of the foodie world. Tonight I went to Whole Foods and they will be having a "Healthy Eating" seminar featuring vegan recipes.

I find it amusing how vegans own the word "healthy" in conjunction with food and eating.

On my end, I have been on a paleo-inspired diet for over six weeks. I'll stick to it for another six weeks and see where it takes me. Results have been positive so far.

I think the lunch ladies need to learn to cook. Nobody likes boiled-to-death veggies. Use a little spice.
