"I have to have my guard up. … I still believe that people are truly good at heart, as Anne Frank has said, and I will put myself in any position to help another human in any way I can." Zimmerman shouldn’t have made that comparison, according to Yvonne Simons, executive director of the Anne Frank Center, a gallery that contains reproductions of Frank’s famous diary, family photos and other artifacts from the Holocaust. “They have very different histories, let me put it like that. She lived her life with very high hopes and very high ideals and believing in humanity in a way that I wouldn’t compare to George Zimmerman,” Simons said. “It’s just unfortunate that he puts out a statement like that. Anne Frank was a Holocaust victim and I think people have to be a little bit more careful when they compare their own situations, particularly when they have the kind of history that George Zimmerman has.” Zimmerman was acquitted in 2013 of manslaughter in the 2012 death of Trayvon, an unarmed black teenager, following a scuffle in Sanford, Florida. That one person killed another is essential for a murder charge; it's the first piece of evidence a prosecutor has to introduce. 2. Yes, but that is irrelevant to the question of whether he did or did not commit the crime charged It's not admissible in court, but if someone has a long and varied history of committing violent acts without justification, it stands to reason that a violent act they confessed to committing has no justification without evidence to prove it does. 3. First part I agree with, but there was reasonable doubt on the second two clauses Self-defense is an affirmative defense; it has to be proven. That Zimmerman intentionally hunted down Martin while Martin attempted to escape proves that Zimmerman did not kill him in self-defense. Because Zimmerman confessed to the killing and did not offer any justification, he is guilty of murder. Personally I think they would have stood a better chance charging Aggravated Battery which is the same level of felony as what was charged but fit the facts better And, of course, since Martin died as a result then Zimmerman would be guilty of felony murder. So you're basically just arguing the prosecutor should have used a different strategy to pursue a murder charge against Zimmerman. That is something I can agree with. |
