Then again, al-Arabiya is backed by the Saudis, who hate Iran, so it's not all that surprising. If the Saudis don't want the power vacuum, what are THEY doing about it? |

Typical Arab cowardice. They bluster and bloviate but when it comes down to brass tacks, they hide behind tiny Israel. They figure the Israelis saved their bacon in 1981 when they destroyed Iraq's nuclear reactor, so they can do it again. |

The Saudis haven't exactly been as vociferous in claiming Daesh is evil incarnate as Jordan has. The Iranians have taken notice of that, and the close links between Wahabism and Salafism, and there supposedly had some grumbling that Daesh is at best state-sponsored terrorism with the Saudis as the supporters. At worst Daesh's genocidal tendencies against Shiites then makes them an arm of the Saudis carrying out a genocide. That story isn't exactly logical as the Daesh rejects the claim of the Saudi royal family to their part of the Arabian peninsula. But it really doesn't help that Senators McCain, and Graham urged the Saudis to arm the Syrian rebels that ultimately became Daesh in January of last year. The Saudis conveniently forgot to give money to the Shiite rebels while lavishing heavy infantry weapons on the Sunni rebels. And then there's the fact that the Salafism of Daesh and Wahhabism practiced in Saudi Arabia are very closely related. So we have Iran, with its majority Shiite population, watching a terrorist organization with ties to the Saudis that could be argued to be stronger than their own ties to Hezbollah, being forced to sit on its hands while that terrorist group slaughters Shiites by the thousand in neighboring Iraq. At some point if Daesh keeps up their genocide Iran is going to take a more active role, and they'd be absolutely idiotic to restrict their attack to Daesh. If they feel the Saudis are the root of Daesh's power then they'd need to make some sort of strike across the Persian Gulf. The US is going to have a hard choice to make. We know the Saudis have given aid to Daesh. We told them to do that. We know that ISIS and Al-Qaida fighters are held in "prisons" that are closer to four star hotels and are paid handsomely for their stay. At some point we're going to have to realize that the Saudis may be one of the biggest state sponsors of terrorism in the Middle East. Will we side with big oil and turn a blind eye to Saudi terrorism, or will we acknowledge the Saudis' culpability, step aside, and let the Iranians have it out with the Saudis? None of this of course means Iran should have the bomb. But in this case Israel is a minor factor. I've argued the primary target of an Iranian nuke would be Riyadh, Doha, Bahrain, or Abu Dhabi, and the rise of Daesh and their Shiite genocide could well have given a nuclear armed Iran a rationale for a first strike. I think it's quite possible a non-nuclear Iran will contemplate strategic strikes against the Saudis, if only to impair their economy and deter further support for Daesh. |

No, they want America to do something about Iran. We're the only ones with a naval presence in the Gulf strong enough to repulse an Iranian attack. They have normal, ostensibly friendly relations with us, and our militaries train together.I'd argue that other than using the Israeli PM's speech, there really isn't any involvement of Israel here. This is about Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the US. Israel has their own reasons to want the US to take a hard line on Iran, but Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states have a far more concrete reason to want to see Iran marginalized militarily. |

IMHO that's a great point. I keep wondering about the possibility of a war, or proxy war, in Central Asia with Russia, Iran, and China as the combatants. We've inserted ourselves into the middle of any potential conflict by taking the Taliban out in Afghanistan. But in the future it may be the Chinese looking to keep the Strait of Hormuz open who apply pressure on Iran from Afghanistan. But of course it's in Russia's best interest to keep oil prices high, so they may interfere with any attempt at a Chinese offensive on Iran. |
