Boehner invites Netanyahu to speak to Congress

By Jake Sherman

1/21/15 9:30 AM EST

Speaker John Boehner has invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to a joint session of Congress about Iran next month, a move sure to inflame the Obama administration, which is trying to negotiate a nuclear deal with the Islamic republic.

Netanyahu is vehemently opposed to the emerging deal, and has been very vocal that the United States is making a mistake in negotiating with the nation. In many ways, he’s served as President Barack Obama’s foil as negotiations have progressed. Boehner, an Ohio Republican, is setting up a major confrontation with the Obama administration one day after the State of the Union — a move that is sure to put him in good graces with his House Republican Conference. Boehner has invited Netanyahu to address Congress for a third time Feb. 11.

“You may have seen that on Friday, the president warned us not to move ahead with sanctions on Iran, a state sponsor of terror,” Boehner said in a meeting of Republicans Wednesday morning. “His exact message to us was, ‘Hold your fire.’ He expects us to stand idly by and do nothing while he cuts a bad deal with Iran. Two words: Hell no! … We’re going to do no such thing.

“I am specifically asking him to address Congress on the threats posed by radical Islam and Iran,” Boehner said in the meeting. “America and Israel have always stood together in shared cause and common ideals, and now we must rise to the moment again. Let’s send a clear message to the White House — and the world — about our commitment to Israel and our allies.”

Congress has been weighing legislation to impose additional sanctions on Iran — even as Secretary of State John Kerry has been trying to negotiate an agreement to cut back on Iran’s nuclear arsenal. There is bipartisan support for additional sanctions, but Obama said in his speech Tuesday night he would veto additional measures at this time.

Boehner's invitation is an intrusion into the politics of a sovereign nation - Israel. Netanyahu is a caretaker prime minister. Elections are scheduled for March 17th - one month after Netanyahu has been invited to speak. I do not counsel Israelis on how they should vote. However, I'd be very upset with a foreigner trying to prop up a candidate who has a good chance of being thrown out by his electorate.

LOL! Do you remember Clinton sending operatives to Israel to try to shore up the Labor Party there? You don't find Obama's bitching about building apartment houses in East Jerusalem intrusion? You don't find all Kerry's numerous remarks intrusion?

The Democrats are a little bit pregnant.

I thought Clinton over-reached then. It did not do Ehud Barak any good.

There's a difference between interference in a sovereign country's elections and declaring what US policy is. Obama and Kerry have not changed their changed their rhetoric when Netanyahu called for elections. They have stated the same message before and after.

If Boehner believes the House of Representatives should make a foreign policy statement, the proper course would be to invite the next Israeli Prime Minister after he is installed. Inviting the present Prime Minister, while an election campaign is in progress is interference in Israel's election.

No it isn't. US policy has been to interfere in Israel's sovereign affairs since Day One.

Hand out enough billions in aid and oddly enough they expect something in return. :)

We send billions in aid and copious American blood to much of the world and they spit in our face.

And I doubt you mean it in this way, but I find the popular conception that you buy and own Jews with money deeply offensive.

Agreed. But it has nothing to do with Jews. The US has certainly expected various quid pro quos from the support it has given the UK and West Germany in past decades as well.
