Oh shit! Sorry to hear that. Used to work with him for a while back in the day. He was a really nice guy too. I do feel sorry for whoever has to clean out his office though. Here's how *I* remember Joe:

An interesting treatise and background of two of my favorite people to work with many years ago. John Zacherle is still kicking, heard from him a couple of months ago. Putting the two of them together for an interview though, LOLOL!

He was born as Joseph Fortgang back somewhere in the mid 1920's. Joe Franklin was his "stage name." He got hooked up as a teenager with the old WNEW-AM in NYC and was Martin Block's original record picker back then. What trains are to foamers, old records were to Uncle Joe. He was really into old silent movies, and fell in with the old Broadway crowd such as Doreen Davis, Kitty Carlisle and many others of the vintage when Broadway theater was at the top of its game back in the old days.

Since then he did radio on WOR, and then became a mainstay on WOR-TV which is where I met him as an engineer, hand-picked by Doreen to work with him on his shows. When RKO General lost the license, he was forced to move out of his office in the WOR-TV building on Broadway and 42nd Street down to 33rd street where he just kept on keeping on. WOR-TV became WWOR-TV and moved across the river to New Jersey in what was once the "Tiger Racket Club" in Paramus which was owned by Bill Bradley, the famous NJ politician and crook. Then again, RKO General was run by crooks, so somehow it fit. Heh.

Joe was a really great guy although he lived in his own little world and let few into it. It was a pleasure for me to be one of the few that he let himself be free with. He was also good friends with John Zacherle, who I worked with also at WNEW-FM before both of us flew the coop over to WPLJ after he had his fill of enough Jonathan Schwartz tantrums and his contract was up. :)

Uncle Joe was a true NYC treasure, brought to you tonight by Martian Paint, thank you. :)

And on a side note, thinking of John, here's his favorite tune that many might remember him playing on NEW-FM back in the day. John was part Native American, part descendant of the Philadelphia Rittenhouse family.

Those my age will remember this tune. He burned out this particular record. :)

Aw geez. YOu just made my shitlist. :)

Zach and I couldn't stand her with her "deep throat" Sennheiser mic (which was hers and NEVER to be borrowed) that turned her squeaky grandma voice into what teens everywhere fapped to. She was in her late 50's then, another of the "old Broadway theater" crowd and she was a bitch on wheels if you DARED to play any record she tried to hide in the NEW rack for herself. I could tell you stories about "grandma" as Zach would call her, but decorum prevents such. Heh.

Jonathan Livingston ("My daddy was an orchestra conductor, so bow to me") Schwartz, official crybaby of John Kluge's Metromedia Corporation. Ah, won't spoil the magic, but WNEW-FM had some really interesting people there back when I was there. About the ONLY sane people there was Vin Skelsa, Dave Herman, Pete Fornatale and of course good old "Uncle Scottso" Muni, powered by Jack Daniels in his desk. LOL.

Honorable mention to my good old buddy Richard ("Don't call me Dick") Neer to came over from WLIR as well as Al ("burnout") Bernstein. But he was there long after I left. :)

It was a very interesting place to work, so many personalities, so many dramas between the AM side and the FM side. And when the station moved to 5th Avenue, got even stranger. Heh.

Grandma however, was an absolute bitch. None of us liked her, but she had her following. Prima donnas had their place, but this was WNEW-FM fer krissakes. Hippie land, play what you wanted. Go downstairs, light up a bowl, hell. Do it in the studio, nobody gave a crap. Scottso was on the edge of passing out on bourbon at 4PM and he was in charge. As long as you were in the door and had your needle down on your starting cut for the hour when your leader's show was over, it was magic. You got paid. Lulz.

Amazing.

Schwartz is still going strong, though not playing rock any more! (FWIW, his daddy was actually a Broadway composer.)

I had no idea Allison was that old at the time. What a letdown! Of course, back then radio jocks never showed their faces anywhere.

Richard is an EXTREMELY cool guy. And yeah, I'd bust his chops by calling him by his tetragrammaton monicker just to elicit that patented smirk. Yeah, it's amazing that grownups STILL do radio. I wonder how Jean Atwood of WDST fame is doing? Bingbong and I were regulars on her show. Radio is a liberating art, but it pays for shit. To this very day, still wish I could afford to go back and do it again. But hey, banks want their checks and radio stations can't afford to cut them these days. :(

It was her magical Sennheiser. Bass boost. :)

And I call bullshit on that. When I did radio, there was no end to showing up with a truck at shopping centers to do "live show" with eggs flying everywhere. Only difference of course was that we did those on lawn Guyland and New Jerky mostly, aside from the rare occasions when we'd end up on one of Lindsay's "Music in the parks" flatbeds on some sidestreet in the Bronx. (grin)

Grandma had her following, that's for sure. She was the original MILF. Heh.

You might get a kick out of this. I was out of there in '72, but here's some shots of the motley crew four years later.

And even some MORE years later in '82:
